Re: How to ice-axe self arrest
Dave, I saw that attachment you describe (to the sternum strap) last season and I am also considering it, but I am not sure it would break away easily unless manually un-clipped. I am always surprised how strong these little buckles are. Maybe we should propose these tests to Myth Busters ...

Re: How to ice-axe self arrest
I am also leaning towards having the ice axe rigged securely to me. Last season I kept my axe attached to my pack's hip belt, problem was that when I wanted to drop my pack down I had to un-clip the sling -- so I didn't like that setup, besides pack's hip belt is not all that secure anyway. This sea...

Re: How to ice-axe self arrest
One thing I still haven't decided on is the axe-sling -- attach it to yourself (i.e. hip-belt/pack) or not? PRO: it can help in self-belay situation; CON: the axe can swing wildly if you loose it while sliding down the slope causing serious injury, but then again if sliding you loose the axe, what's...

John Long
We were at Rockreation in West LA on Sunday (took my son there to have some fun) and as I was putting on my harness I turned and saw a familiar face sitting right next to us, it was John Long . He was talking with one of the instructors there. I said hello and we introduced ourselves to him and ende...

Joshua Tree Nov 27-28 2010 with Dave Mayville
This past weekend my girlfriend and I finally took our first rock climbing class in Joshua Tree with Vertical Adventures. Dave Mayville was our guide ... I was just blown away by what Dave was doing on the rock -- it was mind boggling to me that he'd climb 90 feet on 5.8 without any protection, then...

They are running ubbthreads (this board is PHPBB) and it seems they have some very good SEO plugins, for instance here's an example of a URL on that board: http://www.whitneyzone.com/wz/ubbthreads.php/topics/4904/Current_Conditions_Mt_Whitney_#Post4904 ^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^ ^^ ^^^^^^^ which res...

Re: This board is dying
Buying shared hosting services gives you everything you'd get from owning and managing the hardware yourself, plus security and backups, without the headaches associated with maintaining a box and a high speed network link. I don't recommend putting a community resource like this forum on a persona...

Re: This board is dying
Just to clarify: (because I keep seeing the $86/month being repeated) That number ($86/month) is what I pay for a dedicated virtual server and it was given as an example of what you get at Amazon Web Services. This doesn't mean it will cost this much to run this particular forum. :D For instance, I ...

Re: This board is dying
Vitaly might have more experience with webhosts. I personally run everything on Amazon Web Services using their EC2 instances. No long term contracts to sign, fast deployments, ease of backup/recovery, reliability (it's the same infrastructure that amazon.com runs on). For what I get it's worth eve...

Okay, I should read the links you posted, but I'm at work. Does it have to be phpBB? Any chance this could be run on FluxBB or PunBB? This forum and myfreeforum is on phpBB. My guess is that the export they will provide is going to be a phpBB's mysql "dump file" and any migration to a dif...

In regards to getting data out of myfreeforum: Almost a year ago I signed up for myfreeforum.org account just to see how their infrastructure is setup. I suspect (judging by the traffic on Ski Hut Trail lately) there are other po...
