Trekking poles help a lot with knee strain. Slowing down going downhill and leaning on your knees with the palm of your hands also helps in a pinch.

Preventive measures? 20-30 minutes of StairMaster -- everyday

Just went through the full album -- what a great day with the clouds coming in over the bowl. Steep chute! Huge amount of snow at the top, and the bear track! Thank you for sharing Norma! I can't wait to get a day off to get up there ... maybe this week.

Thinking of taking my son over to South Fork this weekend but not sure about the avalanche dangers. How far in can we go without worrying about it? Or is it a bad idea period?

Should we stick to San Jacinto instead? It's a bit too crowded for my taste though ...

Jim, It's best to stick with the 12 point steel crampons for general mountaineering. Fit is critical especially for smaller boots -- I went through couple of them for my girlfriend before I found what worked. Well you are right about the avy danger -- there were couple of slopes on the Ski Hut trail where I didn't want to stay even a second longer than necessary -- of course that's just playing Russian roulette, so was the rime ice falling from the trees by the way ... and majority of the people I saw on...
