Re: Baldy Accident - Lessons Learned

Don't overlook a package or two of hand and/or foot warmers. Crack one open and tuck it under your hat...mmmm, ten hours of toasty. Okay, maybe not quite toasty, but it will at least take a bit of the edge off of a frigid bivy.

Hikers Anonymous

After reading through this forum for some time now, it occurs to me that many of us (you know in your heart who you are) might just have a bit of a hiking problem. Do you find yourself missing work to go hike? Does your family think that your trekking poles are a just a freakish extension of your ar...

Re: Baden Powell: Missed it by that much.

Not sure EnFuego. I thought maybe New Years Day, but got a call to go snowshoeing up at Mt Pinos with an old friend. It looks though as if I'm going to be unemployed in a few weeks, so there will be plenty of time for my mistress, the hills, then. Lemonade from lemons I suppose. Hopefully some more ...

Might see you there then. Post a TR though, because we may be headed up NYD instead. Have fun.

Mt Pinos recon?

Anyone been up to Mt Pinos recently? Got a call from friend who suggested some snowshoeing, but am unsure what coverage is like. Thanks

Baden Powell: Missed it by that much.

My hiking buddy and I, after failing to summit BP a few years ago in the Fall due to poor planning and a water bladder failure, decided to take another stab at the mountain, this time from the Vincent Gap side. Since we're both fairly new to the winter travel game we opted to keep it relatively mell...

Headed up BP tomorrow via Vincent Gap and the use trail, and wondering about conditions. Anyone been up lately?

Re: What backpack do you have?

Another vote for the E-frame. I've had a Jansport Yosemite for more than 10 years now that is great for any short/mid length trip, and it's pretty much my go to pack year round. Lots of pockets and easy panel access give me plenty of room. I can even stow the bear canister without blinking. I had a ...

Re: The Station Fire Thread

I understand that it is human nature to want to lay blame somewhere, and perhaps rightly so, but it seems to me that the damage is done. Instead of wasting valuable resources in laying blame, perhaps we should look forward to restoring our beloved forest. Just my two cents.

Thanks all, for the very helpful tid bits of wisdom. Taking it all into consideration and waiting to see what conditions are like closer to launch.

Advice regarding Baden Powell

Hi Guys, Relatively new to the forum, but have been reading up on past posts, and value your collective experience and wisdom. Here's the situation: Two friends and I, all intermediate or advanced intermediate 3 season hikers and backpackers are looking into giving some winter dayhiking a try. We'd ...

Re: San Gorgonio - 11.28.09

Wondering, did you wear crampons? Or were just boots sufficient? Looking into doing more hiking this winter and wondering what I can get away with. I see you had poles, but did you also pack an ice axe. Love the conditions though. Looks like a perfect late fall outing.

Sespe Wilderness, Gene Marshall/Piedra Blanca trail

A buddy and I set out for a two nighter, trailheading at Reyes Creek campground. I'd never been on this trail, and couldn't get any confirmation on whether there was water or not, so we both packed in 7L+ of water. Our plan was to hike 8 mi to Haddock and camp, with some dayhiking options for the ne...
