Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)

Update: As of 9/16/2017, no water is flowing from the pipe at Kelly's Camp. I had to backtrack to Columbine Spring to fill up on water.

Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)

Any news this year regarding the water at Kelly's camp? I would imagine there should be plenty of water, but I'm curious if anyone's been up there recently.

Found a camera while hiking up San Bernardino Peak yesterday. If you think it's yours, message me with a description of the camera (brand, model, etc.) and I'll try to make arrangements to get it back to you.

Re: Close Bear Encounter

I also saw a black bear about 3 years ago on the same trail, roughly 20 minutes up from Orchard Camp. Similar circumstances: heard a crashing sound in front me, saw a big furry ass on the trail, then watched that big furry ass (connected to a bear's body) scamper down the side of the slope. The whol...

Glendora Ridge Road: Closed

I planned on heading up GRR (or GMR? GRRM?) to visit Sunset Peak but was impeded after making a left from Mt. Baldy Road. Not very surprising, really, given the fire conditions. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/i.imgur.com/tTB5H7S.jpg In other news, the Etiwanda fire looked pretty gnarly this ...

Can anyone identify this waterfall?

Yesterday, I hiked up the East Fork of Big Santa Anita Canyon until I came to this waterfall. Because there wasn't a reasonable way to get around it, I assumed it was Adams Falls. But I'm not 100% sure -- even removing those boulders, it didn't seem all that tall. Can anyone familiar with the falls ...

Re: Adam's Falls - East Fork Big Santa Anita 1-20-14

Very cool! It's nice to take the seldom visited paths of Chantry Flat. During my first visit to the East Fork of BSAC, I came across what I thought were Adams Falls, but upon clambering up the right-hand rocky side, I found that the canyon kept going. I journeyed on further but then turned back due ...

Re: Bailey Canyon Question

I've exited Bailey Canyon Park an hour past sunset once or twice without incident. From what I remember, the gate was never closed. Just in case, I wouldn't park inside lest the gate is locked. There's plenty of free street parking on the side streets, though. I always opt to park on the side street...

I just read your post. Wow, what an accomplishment! The mental (not to mention physical) fortitude of embarking on an ultramarathon like the AC-100 is mind-boggling to slowpokes like myself. Looking forward to reading a trail report from you of next year's AC-100.

Finally got around to visiting Adams Falls properly on 6/12/13. PackGreg was right, it's about 30 minutes past the swimming hole/cascade pictured above. I stupidly deleted my pictures by accident while they were uploading to my computer, so only about 1/3 of my pics made it to my computer. Unfortuna...

How do you run down Iron and only fall once? I fall more than that walking down. By my calc, that's an average pace of 4.38 mph. He is some sort of phenomenon, both physically and mentally. People doubted his JMT unsupported speed record in 2009 until he won the Barkley. I've learned a lot from rea...

Re: Bear Flats to Mt. Baldy (5/10/13)

That's right, the Bear Canyon/Bear Flats trail reaches a saddle between West Baldy and Baldy proper, but it doesn't actually pass over West Baldy. It's a 5-10 minute walk from the saddle to West Baldy. I didn't see a cartoony bear sign, unfortunately. It's possible I simply didn't notice it since I ...

Bear Flats to Mt. Baldy (5/10/13)

I've visited Baldy numerous times, but this was my first outing from Mt. Baldy Village. Seeing as how the route was measured at a little over 6 miles, I had hoped to do it under 3.5 hours, but it took me at least 4.75 hours. I guess I underestimated the strain the steepness would have on my speed. A...

2/7/13: Santa Anita Creek's East Fork

From Chantry Flat, I took a stroll up the East Fork in Big Santa Anita Canyon. There were plenty of people on the trail to Sturtevant Falls, but not a soul was seen in the East Fork. 11:30: Started the walk from the half-full parking lot, descending to the canyon bottom. 11:50: Reached Cabin 67 at t...
