Re: Bailey Cnyn - Hastings Peak - Toll Road - Mt. Wilson Trail

Whoa, dude, that's like so cosmic, you know? Thanks for the photo. HJ Whoops, they'll be closed until the spring. I'll concur with the others that the final push to the Toll Road is quite steep -- but it's really just a short stretch. As for time, I believe it took me about two hours to get t...

Re: Clamshell Peak, Monrovia Peak

I haven't been up the entire way, but the portion up Clamshell is quite brushy. http://i51.tinypic.com/kdmiqg.jpg Last summer, instead of ascending that ridge up Clamshell, I inadvertently went down a terribly unmaintained trail. After turning around, I realized I should've gone up this way: http://...

Re: Bailey Cnyn - Hastings Peak - Toll Road - Mt. Wilson Trail

That segment up and then past Hastings Peak is a bit steep and crumbly, but there should be enough footholds, etc.

Have fun out there. FYI, if you have time to visit Mt. Wilson, the cosmic cafe is open from 10am to 4pm.

Fish Canyon Falls (11-11-10)

I told my friend that Vulcan Mining Co. will run shuttles this Saturday to the Fish Canyon Falls trail head. He wanted to know if the waterfall was flowing well, so I paid a visit via Van Tassel Ridge from Encanto Parkway. Going up, the start of the ridge was straightforward, but the views were unin...

Nice pictures, AlanK. I didn't notice that "Jebb" rock lettering yesterday. Were people conducting prayers in one of your photos? I reached Baldy at around 11 am and immediately went down the north backbone. When the far-off thunder started to sound closer and more frequent, I recalled a s...

Re: Kodak playsport, and digital camera question

I bought a Canon SD1300 recently for a pretty good price. Though it doesn't have an optical viewfinder, the camera still works great. Its 4000 x 2248 widescreen setting is useful for landscape shots.

Conditions at the Cosmic Cafe on Mt. Wilson?

Hello, has anyone tried the Cosmic Cafe yet? I was planning on dropping by Mt. Wilson this weekend without bringing a lunch. It would be very disappointing to arrive only to find out they've suddenly closed for repairs or are charging $20 a sandwich.

Cool stuff. I wish I had an opportunity to do something similar when I was younger. I didn't realize the joys of backpacking until I actually picked it up years later. I also wish my parents followed through on their threat to make me take piano lessons, but that's too off-topic.

Scouting?

I just read an article in the NYT about the 100th year anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. I've only personally known two or three people who were actual members. Anyone here an alumni? If so, did the experience significantly foster an appreciation for the outdoors, or was that always there?

Re: Van Tassel Ridge (07-17-2010)

The first mile ascending the ridge was clear of poison oak. Upon descending the "jungle" area, I didn't get very far, so I can't estimate the number of poison oak plants in that area. I generally didn't notice any in front of me impeding my access. However, I took a pic of this red ribbon ...
