Re: Annual Winter Mountaineering Clinic
Hi Taco, It will be impossible to expect consolidated snow condition on certain day in the month. Even the snow from last two storms finally consolidate enough to be slippery just recently. I don't know what you are going to teach but there is still good amount of snow in some steep enough slopes an...

Hi Birdman, The only thing I can tell you about Cucamonga peak trail is do not try it when the Icehouse saddle area and beyond is covered with solid snow and frozen. The traverse section of trail from bottom of Bighorn peak to Cucamonga peak is very challenging if it is frozen. This area gets very s...

Re: General Conditions
Hi Birdman, I will choose my snow gears based upon the snow condition. If the snow is fresh snow regardless how heavy it is, I use microspike on winter boots with gators or boots and gators only. I use a set of poles with a big basket, no ice axe. If the snow is consolidated and the trail is relativ...

Hi, I hiked with Doug Thompson, owner of Whitney portal store, last January on west BOWL of Mt. Baldy in very icy condition. He used a microspike all the way to the ridge. He maintained his body balance with 3 points contact to the slope. It was the most extreme application for a microspike I have e...

Hi Taco,
Thank you very much for your super quick reply and kind consideration.
Did you enjoy the view of north face of Mt. Russell's?
I came down through Sakai Col, just below Mt. Russell, two weeks ago.
There are many good rock walls to climb on south side, too.
Thank you again.
