Re: Hines Peak

I sent an email this morning to Pinetar, the dude who left the Creampuff register in 1999, asking about the origin of the name. I don't expect a 22 year old email address to still be in use, but it was worth a shot. I don't know if bardley still visits this site, but he might now. Or he might know ...

Was there still a downed tree blocking the trail just below Chorro Grande trail camp?
that impediment is no longer. we removed the trail blocking portion of that tree 11.22.2020.

"From the viewing area, I shortcut the longest most mellow switchbacks in the history of trail building." seriously? and you saved how much time? shame on you. and you helped create more erosion on that trail. but you peak bagged then bragged and now you are done and smug. if you don't lik...

sweet trip, especially finding the gate open and not having to walk to dough flat. i mean we're all walking but why walk extra if not necessary? how was the section dropping down into the sespe 500' ? i recall it had been problematic - big washout - in that area. hear any cats at the hot springs? i ...

sorry for being late to the party. yes, poodle dog, in the ojai ranger district’s area, is found on many of the trails impacted by the thomas fire. some people have little to no reaction - most have mild to severe reactions. for me, i found that covering the areas, once the rash shows, with cortison...

Re: Sespe hot spring via piedra blanca

embarrassingly, i have never been to sespe hot springs. from the many pictures i've seen and the reports i've read, perhaps that is the reason why. to me sespe hot springs appears to be like a desert. no green. i am not a fan of deserts. appreciate them, certainly. more solitude than willett - furth...

Re: Sespe hot spring via piedra blanca

as a usfs volunteer, i drove past the locked gate to the dough flat trailhead.

the gate remains locked due to a hazardous condition near a water crossing where there is an approximate three (3) foot drop off from the concrete roadbed.

uncertain when it will be repaired.

certainly walkable.

Re: Rose Valley Falls

Any idea why it's called Rose Valley? I believe, although I'm not certain, that its named after the wild roses that grow in the valley. Like Thorn Meadows at the end of Grade Valley Road. UR, i believe Thorn Meadows / Thorn Lookout were named after William H. Thorn. he was a prolific usgs surveyor ...

that is actually a usfs car camp called "elder camp". and yes, it is on hines peak road (aka nordhoff ridge road) between the end-of-the road barrier and the intersection of hines peak road / red reef trail where it heads down / south to white ledge camp, then sisar canyon road and finally...

although written as a survey for the usfs, this hopes to show that the southern los padres has great multi-day loops when (a) it is not too hot and (2) when there's lots of water. and right now is a great time to come and enjoy before we hit our high temps. must carry water from ladybug camp to junc...

2016.07.07 Bear Canyon sawyer completed

last month we attempted to clear the trail of a large downed tree.

this past week a group of volunteer sawyers revisited the site and totally cleared the trail.

i was unable to attend.

I'm curious though, why aren't gas powered saws used? good question. two things: . i am told that a chain saw crew did not want to cut this tree. not sure why not. we did a fine job and will complete the job by hand when the temps drop about 25 F degrees. . in a federally designated "wildernes...
