Cool beans. I'd be willing to bet that Matt has actually seen this since it is in Haines Cyn. but perhaps not. Hikin' Jim and I ran across this on a short hike about 6 years ago. A couple of other pictures can be found on the flickr page with a description of which angle picture is taken from... ht...

i settled on western mountaineering as the supplier.
i tried on a summerlite and a megalite.
i chose the megalite - roomier and more comfortable for me.
was able to get it at a 20% discount.
have not regretted the decision.
ymmv.

seems strange that backpacking in the wilderness did not put them in the best of moods. i totally agree with you, but as both an at hiker and a pct hiker told me independently of each other, "to you it's a day hike, to me it's a job." all they do is walk, eat and sleep. doesn't seem like ...

my point is that one can always go lighter - but at a cost. using the figures below i have cut your weight (using your figures = 8 lbs 3 oz) in half - but at an additional cost (retail / no taxes) of $771.00. pack: gossamer gear mariposa - 4244 ci 1lb 11oz $235.00 bag: western mountaineering highlit...

Re: New Packpack
what they all said. i've also recently done research on the very same issue. the unaddressed issue here so far is the cost / benefit ratio. the big variable weights are pack, tent, bag and pad. you can get each of those down to a very low weight - but to do so could set you back close to $1,000.00. ...
