Re: Tips for hiking in the heat.

The worst I've ever had it is heat exhaustion on the hike out of Havasupai Falls in the Grand Canyon this year. I thought i was going to die.

Re: Have you ever seen a rattlesnake in Icehouse Canyon?

It's not Icehouse but I was one of many witnesses to a medium size rattler at the ski hut on Saturday. He slithered from under the north facing window of the hut up to a tree nearby. It's much higher there so I'd say any area at that elevation and below is prime rattler habitat.

I have the two man version, it's a great tent. Good luck, I'm sure someone will snap it up.

Re: Wilderness Athlete products

I learned nothing from them. This isn't supposed to be a biased plug for them, simply a thanks to whoever mentioned them in that thread you also posted in about wilderness training. I have had to get a crash course on what I can eat, because otherwise if I eat too many calories, or too much fat and ...

Re: Wilderness Athlete products

Have you tried comparing the calorie content of this diet plan with what you formerly ate? Apply a little OCD to counting calories and I bet you'll notice the commerical diet plan has fewer calories, which is what you need to cut down on anyway to loose weight. Just get obsessive about watching wha...

Wilderness Athlete products

I have to drop a line here and say that I read about this company on a thread, and after doing a little Google search I took a flyer on their 28 day challenge. I've been fighting my fitness for about 4 years, and it seemed like there has been dead end after dead end when I'd try to diet and work out...

Re: Mount Baldy First Hike

You couldn't pay me to take the Bear Flat trail in the Summer months, unless I started at around 5am. It's just so dang hot and there's not the same amount of cover as on the Ski Hut trail. Plus it's a lot longer than the others. Frankly, I did that trail a month after I hiked Whitney, and I felt mo...

Re: 06092012 Baldy Loop

A few of my friends and I ended up doing this hike by mistake in 2009 as we prepared for Whitney a couple weeks later. Our plan was to do Icehouse and the 3 T's, then up the DB and down the Ski Hut trail. We had always gone up the Ski Hut trail before, and never up the DB, so being unfamiliar with t...

Re: Rain Jacket

If it's an all-season jacket aren't you going to be a little warm in it during a summer downpour? It seems like it'd be difficult to have it all with one of these. Personally I have the Marmot Precip, which is nice, but i just saw this jacket advertised and it looks good: http://www.rei.com/product/...

48. I'd consider 41 or 42 a much better side to be on, wouldn't you? Oh to be 42 again.... :)

Username is because I hang paper, and I drive a Titan. On the bad side of 40, showing a LOT of wear lately. My broken wrist, suffered 12-28-10, kept me out of any winter fun I had looked forward to this year up in the mountains. I'm married and we have 4 sons, and other than hiking and an occasional...

Haven't tried them, but I believe Backpacker magazine gave them a favorable review. For whatever that's worth. I have 3 pairs of other Salomon shoes and they're just great.

The rules aren't exactly crystal clear, but I also believe that requires a permit. Go to the Inyo Forest Permit page, link can be found at the Whitney Portal Store page.
