Re: Hiking Baldy (and surrounding peaks) in Winter
Like Taco's story, that is absolutely frightening! I just got home with my new BD ice axe, and Grivel G-12's. I'm ready.

Re: South Fork Trail 11/27/10
Ah, got it. Nope, not in the business, but I did work for the guy who directed The Canyon. He invited me to the premiere, which I wasn't able to make. It's such an obscure movie I was kind of shocked to see it in your avatar, so I assumed you worked on it.

Re: Hiking Baldy (and surrounding peaks) in Winter
Thank you, Norma. That's exactly what I'll do. I do have at least two friends willing to go up with me this winter. It would be great to get to know some folks here as well. My wife has a pretty tight leash on my soloing activities, at least in the snow for now. I was hoping to make the WPSMB hike w...

Re: South Fork Trail 11/27/10
Great pics. Please forgive the hijack, but I know the guy who directed the movie in your avatar, The Canyon. Did you have something to do with the film?

Re: Hiking Baldy (and surrounding peaks) in Winter
All good info. I duly noted Norma's post when she said she thought she needed the crampons after the fact. Sorry about the elbow, I think you're more injured than me. As it was, I don't own crampons yet, and I figured the trail I was on would see less snow and certainly not ice. I'm glad I suffered ...

Re: Hiking Baldy (and surrounding peaks) in Winter
lol that must have been fun. We're the lucky ones who got a second chance. Don't think I wasn't pondering that all the way back down to the village. My keister is solid purple today... ![Embarrassed ](./images/smilies/icon_redface.gif)

Re: Hiking Baldy (and surrounding peaks) in Winter
Thanks, Taco. I chose Bear Flat yesterday because I assumed it would be less inclined to present me with danger since it's more south/west facing. At least this early in the season. But I was astounded at the snow level, and how the route down had iced over as I was descending. I also worried about ...

Re: Hiking Baldy (and surrounding peaks) in Winter
I decided to go up Bear Flat this morning. Conditions were good until around 12:00, where they started getting nasty with snow and freezing on the trail. Two guys I was following up decided to come back down after encountering what they said was an icy ridge about 3/4 mile from the summit. They also...

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions
Last time I was at Baldy I rode the chair lift down with one of the party of three I was with. We looked down and our third guy was running down this very spot. He beat us down by at least ten minutes, and when we asked him about it he said the lift operator at the top told him about the trail. So, ...

Re: Mt. Baldy: 07-03-2010
A buddy and I started up the Ski Hut route at around 6:20am, making it back to Manker at around 11:45 after stopping for a snack on the summit. It was a beautiful day to be on the trail. I couldn't believe how many folks were out yesterday, as it was a log jam coming back down. It was beginning to w...

Re: Mt. Whitney: June 2010
In addition to San Gorgonio (Vivian Creek route), do Baldy via the village/Bear Flat trail. To me, this is the most strenuous climb to the summit of Baldy, bar none. It will tell you where you are in your conditioning, which sounds to me like it's better than my own. ![Embarrassed ](./images/smilies/icon_redface.gif)

Re: Ski Hut Rattlesnake
I really didn't realize snakes were up that high, and I also figured it was too late in the season for them if they were present. But I also saw a snake (a Gopher or Garter snake, I think), near the bottom of the Bear Flat trail Saturday. I used to be deathly afraid of snakes, and I attribute that t...

Re: Whitney MT -vs- Baldy via Bear flat
Thanks. I'm still getting fit, and, believe me, I am in no danger of gaining altitude too fast.
Training for Whitney- for me- meant hiking a lot at altitude. Still getting in shape, actually.

Re: Whitney MT -vs- Baldy via Bear flat
I just wonder if anyone who has done both felt similarly. The altitude at Whitney nearly did me in, but I found the actual hike to be fairly tame.

Whitney MT -vs- Baldy via Bear flat
Hi everybody, I just completed the Bear Flat trail to the summit of Baldy this past Saturday 10-24-09. I'm much more beat up than I was the day after doing Whitney on August 29th. In trying to get ready for Whitney this summer (first time for the original 8 guys in our group), we did Baldy twice, Sa...
