It's lottery time!

Who's hoping to do Whitney this year? After missing out on a permit last year, I sent in my request for a party of six in August this year. Good luck to everyone, fingers crossed! :)

Re: 1.27.11 - almost halfway up Iron

Is this trail snow free? I'd like to do a tough hike since I've been out of commission. Given that my arm is still in a cast, and can't self arrest in snow and ice if needed, is this a good hike for me to do while I wait for things to heal up?

Awesome, a trip report and gear review all rolled into one. :) I've been looking at that Variant 52 for a while now. The price is coming down quite a bit, and I need a winter pack.

I love Winamp. I got the HTC EVO, and using these 3rd party apps like Winamp I can put itunes music on my Android phone without Steve Jobs' permission. Suck it, Steve!

Re: How are we doing on the n00b front?

I left a shitload of stickers in the Baldy register during the snow clinic day. Have we got any fresh meat out of that? Been away for a week at a trade show . Would love to get one of those stickers soon. I hope to get my cast off in about 3 weeks and change, and mother nature willing there's still...

Nice! It's good to see all the tools. I'm stuck with being an armchair mountaineer for 6-10 weeks, so I shall live vicariously through all of these adventures. On a side note, I have a friend who had Testicular Cancer, and I dubbed him the One Nut Wonder.

Re: Summiting with out your packs

I had the permits for that exact trip this past Summer but had to cancel due to work. The quota is for exiting Trail Crest to the Portal (I believe) and as long as you go to, and exit the summit from the west side you don't have to mess with the lottery. Another problem I ran into was that trip is 6...

I doubt they really care. They're a general sporting goods store, and their bottom is apparently good enough to run the way they do. If you look at anything they carry, such as golf gear, or flyfishing equipment (just to name a couple things I know something about), they don't really come close to r...

Winter pants

In addition to my slip and fall on the Bear Flat trail a couple weeks ago, I suffered the indignity of a major wardrobe malfunction with my winter pants. The side zipper broke and I was left bare to the world, so I had to chuck them. I bought those pants before I got into winter hiking, and I don't ...

I liked what I read about the Salewah Raven Combi GTX, and bought them for winter stuff. My feet stayed dry and warm the whole day, and I was very comfortable in them until I had my mishap on the Bear Flat trail. They were also $60 off from OMC ($229) when I got them, making them a far better...

Proper ice axe size

Based on my height, 5' 8" (that may be optimistic but I'm sticking with it), I purchased a 65cm axe the other day. I noticed that taller people use 70cm axe's, so based on some things I found on the web I reasoned that I should go for a smaller one. Does this really matter? I'm going to REI ton...

Re: Hiking Baldy (and surrounding peaks) in Winter

I'm not familiar enough with the trail to know that, but suffice it to say I went up past all the switchbacks above Bear Flat before I started hitting snow on the trail in earnest. There was patchy snow right after I got through the houses at the entry point, but it wasn't really on the trail except...
