Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

My buddy and I plan to start *early* on memorial day and head up there before the crowds. Our trip is to get the ski hut, summit and then head down Devil's backbone, the notch and the fire road. The last post I saw here on early May talked about microspikes being required. Is it still the case? Than...

Cool shot kristo. A little love shining down on the summit.

That's one way to put it. I did make it to the summit last year. But I got caught in the nastiest thunder-lightning-hail storm I ever experienced in my life.

Not this year tho. Weather was perfect.

TR: Mt Whitney (second time is the charm)

Permit was approved for 8/1 so I drove up from LA to Lone Pine last Monday. I stopped by the VC and picked up my permit that day. Got the usual speech on bear awareness and proper use of wag bag. Tuesday and Wednesday were spent at Horseshoe Meadow going from Mulkey pass to Trail Peak to Cottonwood ...

Re: Whitney 2013 Training Hikes

I was lucky enough to snag permits to day hike Mt. Whitney on July 7th! I'm in the process of planning my training hikes leading up to the big day and wanted to get your suggestions for getting the most bang for my buck in the mountains of So Cal, so to speak. I have kids every other weekend, so I ...

These are great suggestions but I've got to ask. Do you get a lot of "carry me, Daddy" pleads? My kiddo is over eager and always willing to come along. A few times however, I found myself a mile or so from my car and having to carry her back. My fault, really, but I should have known bette...

Skyline Trail to San Jacinto: night hike?

Hello. I am planning to do Skyline Trail to San Jacinto this summer. Given what I read, the hike is gnarly 1) because of the elevation (10K feet) and 2) the desert heat. Based on your own experience, would you attempt it at night? I am thinking of an early start around 4am...maybe even sooner. Any c...

Re: San Jacinto -- Permit?

We have done SJ twice from the Palm Springs tram. You get a self-issue permit from the ranger station at the start of that hike. If you are coming from Idyllwild, I assume that the ranger station there would have a similar arrangement. There is no charge or quota. Remember that SJ's summit is in a ...

San Jacinto -- Permit?

Greetings. I am looking at hiking San Jacinto in a few months and I am wondering if a permit is needed (a-la-Gorgonio). I have a 2012 "Forest adventure pass" : would it be sufficient? On the localhikes.com web site ( http://www.localhikes.com/Hikes/SanJaci ... n_4472.asp ), the trail repor...

Gorgonio Fire: Vivian Creek & Momyer Trails closed

I got a call yesterday afternoon for Mill Creek Ranger station.

A very nice Ranger lady (I forgot her name) informed me of the trails closure since I had a permit for this Saturday.

The fire was 40% contained at the time of her call.

FYI.

in the snow, soreness scores at 10 (really sore). In the summer, the score is zero, sometimes 1.
Did you have a lot of Post holing and hiked on softer non packed snow?
some and yes.

Re: How to ice-axe self arrest

snow is slippery and it's not uncommon to loose your balance a bit or slip and fall. the axe can fall out (or begin to fall out) of your hand when this happens. a falling axe on a steep slope is as dangerous as a falling rock. plus, without your axe you are left in an unsafe situation. having the l...

i attach my axe by a webbing leash i made to my sternum strap with an open gate 'biner. i highly recommend making a leash that you can attach like this. don't waste your $$ on a wrist leash. you will go crazy changing a wrist leash every time you change direction, plus it can also be dangerous. ano...

Re: How to ice-axe self arrest

The advice in the video is sound. Only raise your feet if you are wearing crampons. If you are not wearing crampons, dig your toes in. If you are wearing crampons, raise your feet to avoid catching a point and cartwheeling. Practice, practice, practice on a safe slope with a safe runout. For instan...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

Greetings!

I will have family visiting from Europe this w-e and I was thinking of taking them on a stroll to either Baden Powell or Ice house saddle.

Can someone share any info regarding the snow conditions? Would it require crampons & ice axe?

TIA.

I read that article yesterday, and it sucks. Leave it to NY Times health bozo writers to put stuff that doesn't say shit, other than, hey you have to endure pain to improve performance.
