South Fork->Gorgonio

Drove to Mentone early Sunday morning from the South bay. Got on the 38 around 4am. As I was approaching the ranger station, I almost ran over some weirdo standing in the middle of the road. The guy was wearing a white sheet or cloak over him. Started at the trailhead around 4:30am. Temp was in the ...

Trip report: South Fork to Gorgonio (well, almost)

Went up there on Sunday. I had to turn around at Dry lake (no crampons). No regrets though. The air was crisp, had the trail to myself and the sky was so blue, no clouds. Compared to last year, the sign post for Dry lake was at my feet. I am a short guy so I am guessing the snow pack was about 5 fee...

If you see a huffing, puffing, sweaty, bald guy with a goatee and a camouflaged camelback, say 'hi'. :)

Until then, I am going back to carbo-loading with oatmeal cookies.

I take the 39 up and turn right on east fork rd all the way to the ranger station, but google maps indicates that taking glendora ridge/mountain road is faster. is that really true? (not driving like Taco) Not fast. Way windy. If you are going to the Sheep Wilderness area, it is faster to take East...

Re: Carbs or proteins? Hiking `meal` question

by far the most important thing is carbs....the days before the hike honestly you could probably eat whatever doesn't give you gastrointestinal issues the day of the hike. a good mix of carbs / protein / fat. i can get away with not eating anything even on a big hike, but generally make a nice sand...

Carbs or proteins? Hiking `meal` question

Hey guys (and gals, if any). For a full day hike, what works best? Carbs or proteins? A mix of both? I am wondering what kind of diet (not sure if it's the right word to use in this context) you would suggest. Based on my own experience, carbs only go so far. I started adding more protein (hard boil...
