Vivian Creek: Closed. Falling trees!

Got there in the early morning hours of 10/9 with my permit in hand. Gate to the Vivian Creek parking area was shut "closed for the season". I then parked and followed the bank of the creek to the trail-head. All I saw was red tape(!) all over with "trail closed -- falling trees"...

Nice job, I hope your boss doesn't read this forum :D . Thx! 8) I'd highly recommend it to anyone...just make sure you're not afraid of the dark :P . Agreed. Beats tossing and turning. Great way to beat the throngs of people going there during daylight.

3 Ts - Friday September 17th

I could not sleep so I got up at 1:30am. emailed my boss to let him know I was taking the day off. Left a note to my wife that I was going hiking. What follows is my report. Times are accurate. Some distances are estimated (I left without my Garmin so I think +/- 10%...wherever trail signs were abse...

Good to know. I am thinking doing the same and taking wife and kids for a morning stroll.

Thanks for the info, mate.

Re: Vincent Gap Trail (Mt. Baden-Powell)

Greetings!

I heard there was a fire in the Big Pines area a few days ago.

What are the conditions around Baden Powell area? Are there any road closures or this fire fully contained?

Thanks for any info you may have.

Re: Yosemite Decimal System (YDS)

All ratings are subjective/relative, they're only meant to be a general guide to relative difficulty. Seems obvious conclusion based on everybody's input. What would seem a class 3 to my flabby self is probably a class 1 to norma, HJ or Taco........ ... to go up the bowl in the summer you do not as...

Class 1 if you're on the trail. Class 2-3 if you are going straight up the bowl or via a chute.
Sounds like a lot of fun. I'd love to try it. Would you typically start from the Ski hut?

Well for my money 1&2 are correctly rated, Assuming By "Baldy Bowl" you mean straight up and not on the trail the other 3 are class 1 IMO Straight up? I did not know it could be done...Actually, I meant on the trail. Oh, I forgot Register Ridge->Mt Hardwood->Baldy Summit: class 2 (for...

Yosemite Decimal System (YDS)

Guys, After I read here posts talking about Class 1, 2 ....I got curious. I started reading about YDS in "Mountaineering: Freedom of the hills" and am looking for some input. This system divides hikes/climbs in 5 fives classes: Class 1: walking Class 2: simple scrambling Class 3: scramblin...

Cool deal. You should take a photo of someone holding up a flag in that taking-a-dump stance the GPS dude is doing, with the GPS next to him. Funny. I didn't think about that... The GPS dude needs to eat more fiber though. Did you ever see an elevation marker on top of Gorgonio? Like this... ...

TR (7/11): South Fork to Gorgonio

Ontario Peak 6/14

Started around 3:30am. Weather reports the previous day talked about temp in the mid 90's. Since I figured I can't beat the heat, I decided to get my ass out of the bed crazy early. Really quiet, dark night. Got to Ice house saddle around 5am. Baldy still shows patches of snow but nothing major. Got...

I'm not quite sure what you mean. AFAIK there's no terrain on the north/regular side requiring any ropework. How steep was it? What crampons are you using? It looked like a 30 degree angle. Cucamonga Peak & A Question

Went to Cucamonga this past Sunday. All went well until about 300 feet from the top. The trail was taken over by hard packed snow covered by a solid sheet of ice. Harmed with an ice axe and crampons, I marched on. But the angle of the slope got steeper. There was no boot print for me to follow. The ...
