Re: Ollestad Canyon/Ontario Peak 3-16-11

It's about time Taco got up there. If it weren't for the discouraging approach, that route would be a local classic. Now it's just a loco classic.

Looking forward to the trip report on this one. That big couloir is clearly visible from San Jacinto. I always wonder about it.

Flagrant Mislabeling of Mountains

This morning I went for a walk in south Orange County and was appalled to see this: https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/lh4.googleusercontent.com/_ggE4fR11050/TWqnVr2zmxI/AAAAAAAAAok/s2wspDn_cL0/s640/IMG_1168.JPG If there is any mountain in SoCal that people should be expected to properly identif...

Re: Mill Creek Feb 20th - Breaking Trail is a B****!

Sam - on that route - I'm guessing you've checked on it from above when you were up on Galena? I don't think I could see the final section because it curved around behind the wall, just wondering if tops off with a rock climb or is it snow/ice the whole way...I know this depends on conditions as we...

Must have been a worthwhile outing, Zach and Patrick, because you were both inspired to write a lot! I think Patrick's 9 day "Leatherneck to Clouds" will be easy to beat . . .

Re: Mill Creek Feb 20th - Breaking Trail is a B****!

Nice trip report and photos. I've also been scoping that "interesting route near Galena", but the upper portion is a big question mark -- it looks very steep. Plus, anything falling from above (rock or snow) would presumably funnel into the narrow chute at the bottom.

Re: Mill Creek Head-wall...Avalanche?

You may have already seen my trip report from last winter. I would recommend an ice axe and crampons for the ascent (snowshoes might come in handy for the approach). There was a lot of avalanche debris below the gauntlet, so I would wait a few days after fresh snow. The traverse along the ridge is s...

Great photos guys and love the return of the Mountaineering Review as weekly reading. :D Thanks Norma! I'm not sure I can endure any more descents of FRC. I might have to bomb down the trail next time. If I recall correctly, it took me two hours to descend Ontario Peak via the trail last time. Comp...

Ontario Peak: Ollestad and Falling Rock Canyons

On Saturday, Patrick and I did an off-the-beaten-path tour de force on Ontario Peak. We climbed an obscure canyon on the northwest side (which I call Ollestad Canyon) and descended all of Falling Rock Canyon. Patrick was especially excited to find this waterfall midway down FRC: http://lh3.ggpht.com...

Re: Falling Rock Canyon (Sugarloaf Peak)

I just descended Falling Rock Canyon in its entirety today. Very roughly -- the bottom half is dry and the top half is covered in consolidated snow. I only saw the top of Sugarloaf Ridge, and it was covered.

The route to the top of Sugarloaf via FRC looked completely dry.

Baldy Bowl, 1/15/2011

Yesterday, six of us had a great morning ascent of Baldy Bowl. Snow conditions were excellent, though there was a constant trickle of projectiles raining down from above. The first mile or so of the trail was mostly free of snow. Read my trip report . http://lh6.ggpht.com/_ggE4fR11050/TTN8YFSudAI/AA...

There was mention of a road being thrashed. Which one, exactly? It is (was) a short steep "road" that's shown on this map (try the satellite view). Goes from point A (parking lot for ski lift) up Manker Cyn. to point B (a point on the road from Manker Flats to Baldy Notch). Kind of a shor...

Baldy. I read somewhere that she was planning to descend Devil's Backbone. I suspect she mistakenly desc...
