Cattle Canyon Tungsten Mine?
The other weekend I hiked the road down from Cow Canyon saddle to the locked gate at the entrance to Thompson Ranch. I printed the "Permission to Walk" pass signed by Ron Curtis found over at the SummitPost page, but never ended up seeing anybody out there. The RV park up top looked empty....

Updates on the hit and run... "new car smell" may have intoxicated driver, sleep apnea is main defense. Seriously?

Re: Pine, Dawson, Wright: 07-10-2010
Thanks for the report. The north side of Baldy is one of my favorites, doesn't get much use and you can feel pretty isolated out there. Last summer I hiked up from Lupine to Dawson. The section from Fish Fork up to Dawson/Pine saddle was a mess. Sometimes you could follow an old truck trail, other t...

Re: Hey Everyone!
You'd be well off to pick up a good map of the area. Tom Harrison's Angeles High Country and Angeles Front Country maps are $8-10 each at REI in Rancho Cucamonga and cover these mountains from I-15 west to Pasadena. There is huge potential for epic hikes in these mountains. You'll find worthwhile hi...

Re: Advice on Telescope Peak
Furnace Creek would be the easiest legal option for getting to the Well early in the morning. If it were me, I'd wait until dusk then pull over on West Side Rd near Hanaupah Canyon, grab a quick nap, then start the hike nice and early. Camping is not allowed on the valley floor but I typically sleep...

Re: snakes on baldy
Same here. I've seen just one rattler in over a year of living, hiking, and biking here. Done almost all the trails in the Baldy/Wrightwood area at least once, including quite a bit of off-trail hiking. I think they're just scared of me.hvydrt wrote:I never see them. I must not be paying attention.

5 peaks out of Icehouse
Another late notice. I can never make up my mind until Friday anyway. Starting at Icehouse tomorrow morning, 8/22, at 7:30am. Heading up to the saddle, then over to Bighorn and Ontario peaks. Back to the saddle and hitting the Three Ts (Timber, Thunder, and Telegraph). Decide at Baldy Notch weather ...

Thanks for the report and pictures. A few weekends ago I hiked the Islip Ridge down into Crystal Lake -- it's a mess of a trail also. I can't complain, though, as I was graced by a group of 8-10 bighorn up there.
Someone also had a car at Crystal Lake, which greatly confused me.

Nice, that's quick! 2.3 mph average for 6000' elevation gain is not anything less than a brisk pace.

The following is from http://www.nps.gov/pwro/sangabriel/ . I plan to go to the August 31 El Monte meeting. =============== The National Park Service is conducting a “special resource study” of portions of the San Gabriel River watershed and the San Gabriel Mountains. Our current newsletter presents...

Re: Dawson Peak Trail from Fish Fork
...is it worth dropping down into praire fork & lupine or just head down pine mt ridge into fish fork then up dawson peak trail? I figured the latter would be the nicest part. There wasn't much special about Lupine & Prairie fork except for the evergreen canopy. I'd still like to take Prair...

Dawson Peak Trail from Fish Fork
On Saturday I found myself climbing out of Manker Flats at 6:10am, not to return again for 14 hours and ~33 miles later. My original plan was to hike to Wrightwood for lunch and back, but I've never been too fond of out-and-back hikes and had another idea after studying Mr. Tom Harrison's map at 4:4...

Re: Chanel Islands -camping-
I did a quick weekend trip to Santa Cruz island in 2005. From what I remember, Santa Cruz was really the only island with decent hiking trails. I took the ferry out to Scorpion and hiked the Montañnon Ridge to Del Norte camp. Spent the night then picked up a ferry back to the mainland from Prisoners...

Re: Baldy Village to Wrightwood
I know this is late notice, but I'm going to attempt this hike tomorrow (Saturday) starting around 5:00am from Manker Flats. Up to the notch and over via Backbone, and I was thinking about taking the Pine Mountain Ridge on the way back from Wrightwood, then descending via the bowl trail depending ho...
