Re: Gabrielino Trail (Big Santa Anita - West Fork - Arroyo Seco)
I guess it was more important to rebuild a perfectly good Supervisor's Office. FudgePackerGreg, The Supervisor's office was a shithole, basically a bunch of trailers and manufactured type buildings probably built before you were even in diapers. It was falling apart. And you can relax your sphincte...

Re: What number to call in an emergency?
I think Ranger stations are pretty useless after hours. Ihave had them not pick up the phone during business hours on many occassions, let alone during an emergency that is off hours. Only thing I have found the ranger stations good for, are weather reports and road conditions --- and on weather, t...

Re: Why the Forest Service is busy and understaffed
As I said, Federal LEO's (and many others) have the right to enforce the law no matter the jurisdiction. LEO's from most agencies overlap each other, especially on National Forests, where state laws may supercede federal, especially with firearms, and especially in an area where local police dept's ...

propaganda We have never seen a trail project done at the Gabes from this A.P. racket. I hope someone can tell us how much the administrative costs are! Double taxation for sure, along with the deceptive so called parking tickets... 666 go to your local forest service office and ask to see the annu...

Re: End of the Adventure Pass?
Undeveloped areas is the key word here. The USFS has been festering the last few years about how they can abide by the actual wording of the law. To this point, they really haven't been. What it comes down to is at some point sooner than later, they are going to have to define "developed sites&...

Re: Why the Forest Service is busy and understaffed
LOL, you're hilarious. This is a Federal Law Enforcement Officer, if they have any suspicions that your firearms may be illegal, they have every right to check that, no matter what the jurisdiction, whether it be county, city, local, state, private or federal. They can usually write citations for at...

Re: Who visits the San Gabriels?
For some more numbers, try looking up the National Visitor Use Monitoring Program. Although, some of the numbers may not be entirely representative of every aspect of use patterns, just doing some basic searches, it looks like they have some decent trends that match what I see out there sometimes. p...

there was 5- 6" around Dawson Saddle. Not a ton of snow, but plenty to plow. Road is icy, especially in the morning and evening.

Re: A Gate For Cobb Estate
That area has been a cesspool for years at night (well, often times during the day, too). If they can find a way to keep it open during the day and closed at night, it's a good idea. That area has been patrolled on a regular basis for years (The late George Geer used to be one of them), but you'd ha...

Re: Mt Wilsons Cosmic Cafe
The road is "maintained" year round as there are obviously alot of people/interests that need access. The problem is, yes, it gets icy and the general public has no clue how to drive on that. It's not like they are going to have chain control on that road.

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)
according to Cal-Trans, Hwy 2 is re-opened again from Islip to Vincent. I guess it wasn't enough to close it for the season, plus maybe the fact it looks mostly dry and warm for the next week or so at least.

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)
Cal-Trans put up those gates on Hwy 2, not the FS. As to when it will close, it's anyone's guess. The first storm we got in Oct put down 6"+ above 7,000 ft, but it was too little snow and too early in the year to close it for the season. My guess is if we get about 8" or more, it will prob...

Re: Missing Hiker: Silver Mocassin/PCT-Baden Powell to Chantry
I think I heard there were 5 separate missing hiker reports yesterday in the forest. Crazy day. To my knowledge, they are still out looking for this guy, but my understanding is that he was on a multi- day hike (as in 3-4 days), not just an overnight, as the Silver Mocassin Trail/PCT from Chantry to...

No Diphole, I'm talking about the Sierra... it's not the "Sierra's". There is no "s" to describe the mountain range. Ever.

Re: San Sevaine Road (1N34)
might want to double check with the local USFS office and see if it is indeed supposed to be open, especially if it hasn't been open in a long time. Sometimes, contractors or other interests leave gates open/unlocked by mistake. It would suck to get locked behind a gate.

generally safe parking, but as in anywhere... keep anything of value out of sight. the spring is less than 1/4 mile SE of the campground... very easy to find as the trail is obvious. The water is my favorite in the San Gabriels, and is always running cold, clear and tasty. It's probably the only wat...

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions
Manker is a rocky shithole. Both the campground and the people that go there. I'd rather camp just about anywhere else, except maybe Monte Cristo.
However, if you're wanting a developed campground near Baldy, you're options are pretty limited.

Clear creek info station is usually open weekends. They are right next to Switzer's and probably know better than anyone about the days/hours the road is open to the bottom.
