Nice. Been a while since I hit the trails, so that'll be a good place to start. Thanks for the response!

Re: Mt. Lowe Road (2N50)
Been a month since the last update and almost three since it was supposed to open in "two weeks". Any idea if the tunnel is open or anyone have any new updates? Thanks.

I would be in on this but alas, my daughter's birthday is that day. Otherwise I would totally join Falcon on the "go slow and smell the flowers" pace. I don't get out enough to be in shape to push the pace. Hopefully next time.

Jeff, Agreed. Percentages seem to be way off. In regards to the National Recreation Area (NRA), just look at the organizations involved: Anahauk Youth Sports Organization, San Gabriel Moutains Forever Coalition, The Wilderness Society, Conservation Corps, Acjachemen Nation - Juaneno Tribe, Sierra Cl...

Re: Sunset Ridge fire rd to mt Lowe
Yup, the parking area looks familiar! Since we didn't see the trail going up the ridge from the road, we dropped down the use trail to the fire road below. I wish I could have taken in the sights, too busy keeping a sharp eye out for these damn bushes. Yes, non burn going forward. Thanks for sharing...

Thanks for sharing the pics. I tried to take my kids up to My. Sally a couple months ago, and the trail and even fire road were covered in Poodle Dog Bush. My son got a nice rash on his back and I didn't even see him brush against any.

That hike is definitely worth the drive. Another of great hike off ACH is to Pallett Mountain or Will Thrall via the Burkhart Trailhead at Buckthorn Campground.

I see from the comments on your blog that a certain SGMD ex-patriate still haunts you. Amazing how he hasn't changed one bit. Amazing, comical, and annoying all at once.
Congrats on the incredible accomplishment.

Re: Hiking Pole Weight
When I first started hiking, I used Leki poles, and last year I switched to REI ones that were an ounce or two lighter each. I noticed the difference when weighing each standing on the trail, but no difference when using on the trail. I have two kids, and don't have the time to workout as much as I ...

I typically bring a pbj sandwich in a bag, and then put my apple core of peel in the bag to carry out. Simple and effective.

I hiked Sawmill and Pinos last week. Driving up to the trailhead, a bear cub raced across the road directly in front of us. Didn't see Momma bear, but that was an amazing sight! And it happened so quickly, didn't get a chance to get a picture.

I'm with Harper. Even though I grew up in L.A., I didn't "find" the San Gabriels until a few years ago when a buddy talked me into climbing Mt. Baldy. I just hiked past Cooper Falls for the first time this spring and couldn't wait to go back since it was so nice down in there. I am sad tha...

I am not saying post it for the humor, but post it because it is real. The forest is closed until this thing is out. As much as it sucks, it is reality right now.

The government has been looking for reasons to spend money on projects to help save jobs and stop the bleeding economy. This will be a perfect project to spend gov. money. Besides 1% of L.A. is more people than most places in U.S.

From the Mt. Wilson Towercam: Note: the large amount of new smoke seen is due to backfires set by firefighters. This is the very best thing to do at the moment. Go California firefighters! Re: The Station Fire Thread
Will the highway stay closed after the fires are out? depends on the damage, and how long it would take to fix. the Curve Fire closed a part of the 2 for 5 or so years! I guess we won't know the full extent of the damage until the rainy season is over next spring. Unstable hillsides in a possible E...

I could not have comprehended that it could burn all the way over to Gleason and then on to Pacifico in so little time. And with no wind...Seems almost impossible to fathom. As for the reason it got so big, I would venture to guess they thought it would be good to have a controlled burn. Now it is ...
