Re: Basic Mountaineering Orientation - Winter 2011

How do you simulate crevasse rescue without a crevasse? It's not that hard actually. To practice self-rescue out of a crevasse, you can start by getting your prussicing dialed-in while hanging from a tree or cliff. With a heavy pack on your back throwing you off balance of course. To practice ancho...

Re: Eaton Canyon Trails

I'm hoping it clears out quickly too. I know little santa anita burned a few years ago and still hasn't recovered yet. Eaton seems to have fared better though, and definitely not as bad as it could have been. That's great to hear that the slide-jump still goes!

Re: That crag again. This time, graffiti clean up!

Wow! Thanks for making the crags a better place! (and having some fun while at it!) Let me know if you ever need help with more high angle graffiti removal projects. I'm curious though... do you paint over the graffiti with rock-colored paint, use paint remover, or does Taco just stand at the base o...

Re: Eaton Canyon Trails

I'm very sad to report the current condition of Eaton Canyon. Some friends of mine just descended Eaton on 4/8, and what used to be crystal clear pools of deep water are now all filled in with gravel and debris. Eaton Canyon was probably my favorite place in all the San Gabriel's... literally nature...

Re: Gear recommendations for Fir Draw maybe(new guy)

To the best of my knowledge no one rents ice axe, crampons (or any avy gear) due to liability reasons. Not anywhere in SoCal at least. I know this because most of my friends are poor college students... and it kinda sucks being the only one of my friends to own gear! edit: according to REI's website...

Arg, I just posted a comment to Ze's blog before I read the replys here. Turns out you all had the same idea as me, but first  Really cool stuff Ze!! I might have to invest in a GPS just to play with this kind of data! What would be really interesting is, given an individual's data, to determin...

Re: Photo Climb/Trek up to Mt Baldy - Feb 04 2010

This seems to be getting excessively complicated with raising and lowering systems and whatnot. It seems pretty straightforward to just come up from the bottom like Taco said. I think the location you want is well below the crux of those routes... Alternatively if you don't want any tracks messing u...

Great TR!

I've always wondered about that gully. I ended up walking the whole way back on the ski hut trail on friday, but I guess I should have snowboarded down the 'express route'! I was afraid of finding myself at the top of San Antonio Falls without a rope

Baldy RR - 2010-01-29

Oh man Baldy was amazing this friday! I went up Baldy for some backcountry snowboarding, and also to test out my new HD Helmet Hero camera. The helmetcam was taking pictures and/or video all day long. 6545 pictures total (!!). Most were pictures of my feet trying not to slip  The ones where I'm...

I'm running out of pictures to post for this game! Despite looking serene, this is the most horrendous patch of buckthorn I have ever encountered. It turns out that it is easily bypassed on the left, but I took the direct BW4 variation. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm3.static.flickr.com/...
