Re: Things Lately

Please don't get creamed while bicycling Mt. Baldy Road. When I see a Ghost Bicycle it is chilling to think about the rider. The aforementioned mountaineering behavior may be far safer...

Re: Lost & Found

Hiking pack has gone missing. Might have been left near the top of the pavement on Mt. Baldy Road, near the sign for the ski area. Red and gray Black Diamond. Don't believe that's where it went but can't figure out what happened to it so figured I would try here. Thanks!

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

Lots and lots of rocks on Mt. Baldy Road this am, one spot before the tunnels had a pretty good slide completely blocking the uphill lane.

It's a nice place, if my memory from 1969 is accurate. We didn't get to use the pool as my class's session was was in the winter. Where was Long Beach's other school camp, Camp Owongo? My class was also at Owongo winter '69. Lots of fun with snow and other merriment. Also lots of amazement at how l...

Re: Strawberry Peak Routes

I was there this morning and there is still a 'Trail Closed' sign at the beginning of the Colby Canyon trail to Strawberry. The two parking areas on that side of the road have large 'No Parking' signs posted. I descended the Red Box side then rode my bike (which I had deposited earlier at the Haramo...

Re: 20140628 Beggars Canyon #2

I was returning to the car in that same parking lot after an excursion in the area, this was on Wednesday (3 days ago) and there were paramedics, private ambulance, fire trucks, CHP, and sheriffs all rolling up just as I departed around 7pm. Hmmmmm... Those yellow line crossers are more prevalent la...

Re: Look For The Skid Marks

Learned some of the details regarding the fatality. Cyclist was descending Mt. Baldy Road near the dam. Chevy Tahoe was also descending. Outside rear view mirror on the passenger side of the Tahoe struck the cyclist in the head as the Tahoe went past the cyclist. Not good. I bicycled on GRR and GMR ...

Re: Look For The Skid Marks

A bicyclist was killed in an encounter with a car on Mt. Baldy Road near the dam, same area where my close call occurred. Saturday morning, maybe around 7:30am, I was descending by car and the road was closed requiring diversion down the Mountain Ave. side. Sheriff's helicopter was just landing on t...

Re: Look For The Skid Marks

I know, I said I wouldn't return without a battleship but we all know how that goes. This morning around 4am some little white car (Geo Metro?) overcooked it just above the tunnels and rolled. Didn't seem to have gone off the side. May have been effected by widely spread debris from rockfall. On my ...

Re: Look For The Skid Marks

Yeah there are kids/inexperienced drivers, and some people who perhaps go 'too fast' by a lot of folk's estimation, but there are also plenty of us who drive safely and respectfully (and fast). I guess what I'm trying so hard to say is that not all of us who drive fast in the hills are yahoos. As l...

Re: Bear Creek Trail (Smith Mountain)

Anybody have knowledge of the route following the Smith Mountain trail to the Saddle and then down to Bear Creek and out at the West Fork of SG river? Are there any route finding challenges descending from the saddle down to the creek?

Look For The Skid Marks

I was driving up Mt. Baldy Road at about 3:30am Saturday just as I've done over 1000 times. I've seen lots of stuff and have always been aware of the dangers having had numerous close calls over the years of driving 25K+ miles a year all over the West but this was really up close. Right around the D...

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions

A bit chilly hiking this am. Just after sunrise around the Notch the breeze made it feel quite cold. Anyway, I spoke with a principal of the Mt. Baldy Ski Lifts and he said they had USFS approval for a number of tent cabins ala Curry Village at Yosemite. Seems like with the Moonlight Hikes put on by...

Re: Ring Tailed Cat

Since they are in the raccoon family, I assume that they are nocturnal. Hence, very rarely seen in daytime. Sad that this one was deceased. 85% of my hiking time is before sunrise so I'm nocturnal too and maybe they're out there on my hikes but unseen. It was sad that this one was dead, I would muc...

Ring Tailed Cat

Saw a Ring Tailed Cat yesterday morning early on the pavement near Manker, unfortunately it was deceased. It wasn't squished but just laying there. I sure wish I would have seen a live one, after 500+ Baldy summits and certainly over 1000 hikes in the greater San Antonio drainage, it seems like I wo...

I really, really, really wish I could say the same thing. Maybe 50% plus pass me at max velocity creating a real danger to everyone AND ignoring right-of-way rules clearly posted.

Re: elevation sickness/AMS

My personal experiences in the Sierras indicate that avoiding high levels of exertion makes a big difference. Cruise up drinking LOTS of water, no problems. Race up with exertion levels right at anaerobic threshold hour after hour (right from sea level), problems with headache/nausea.

Re: Evening/night hikes

I always hike in the dark. Less traffic on the freeway (although lots of DUI types), lots of tranquility, no parking problems, much less UV :) and the beauty of the early morning pre-dawn. I find headlights to be useless due to the loss of shadows/contrast so the hand-held light carried low or the w...

Mt. Baldy Ranger

Walked up from the Village this am then rode the chairlift down. As I stumbled down the ramp into the ski area parking lot there was a "Mt. Baldy Park Ranger" law enforcement dude. White Crown Vic with some sort of insignia and a green uniform (w/ sidearm) that looked like a sheriff. He sa...
