Re: The Station Fire Thread
Here's a brief update as of 9-3-09: Interestingly, the ENPLAN Wildfire map still shows no fire having gone to the top of Vetter, but since the news of the lookout's burning is posted on the ANFFLA web site, it is probably true. As a whole, the lines around the southwest, west, and north seem to be h...

As of Monday evening, Upper Devil's Canyon is in flames. I'm not sure anybody can get into the ANF right now. Almost anywhere.

Re: The Station Fire Thread
This was taken off one of the Sierra Clubs section: "During the night the fire extended eastward and has encircled Mt. Vetter and the Chrarlton-Chilao area. The maps show it burning in Devil's Canyon, on Mt. Mooney, and threatening Newcomb's Ranch. It has also expanded into the upper West Fork,...

These people sell spandex type gators in every color and print you can image. they were like $12 when i bought some a few years ago. they aren't water proof, but they keep the pebbles and sand out. They are good for basic on-trail travel. http://www.dirtygirlgaiters.com/job.html website ways they a...

Re: Light weight gaters
REI has several types. The large type for winter mountaineering, and the lighter summer type. They have two lighweight types inlcuding the spandex type. I have both lightweight types and prefer the spendex type when wearing shorts. They fit closer to the leg and don't look so large. They work great ...

Re: Bivy info
I have the REI minimalist bivy and love it for three seasons (fall, spring, summer). I also have an Alpine bivy sac which I really like. Used it on Shasta and it was nice. The only problem with these two bivy sacs is there is no pole to hold the bivy sac (netting area) away from your face. So if it ...

Patrick - about 4 years ago, I was inspecting a construction site near South Palm Springs and ran into a similar situation. There was almost the exact same size corrugated plastic pipe running under a small maintenance road with shrubs around. A worker found the snakes and there were at least a coup...

Re: Hiking out of Country
Suila Grande would be great, but unfortunatly, I need to keep the extremes to a minimum. Specifically, altitude and cold. Right now, we are doing some deeper investigation to some cross country hiking in the Scottish Highlands, as Zach recommended. The other possibility right now is the Overland tra...

How long does everyone get out of a pair of boots? I seem to wear them out in 12 months, maybe 18 if I am lucky. Any recommendations on a boot that last 2 or more years. I guess it would depend on the mileadge you put on them, and the terrain you hike most. I currently have a pair a La Sportiva Tre...
