Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail
Glad you had a good day of it. I assume the crux you refer to are the two steep gullies that you traverse above where the boot track is narrow and snow frequently icy. I remember walking those years ago with my crampons in my pack and knowing they should be on my feet. I consider myself very lucky ...

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail
Crampons, axe, microspikes and poles. Helmet if you're going up the bowl. Watch for falling rime ice on the bowl or if you walk under a tree that might still be holding rime. Micro's from the TH to the hut can be helpful and crampons above most likely.

San Antonio Ridge Traverse 11.2.13
What do you do for your birthday if you love mountains??? You climb three of them and traverse the whole San Antonio Ridge between them. Dave G and I met up in Azusa to shuttle our cars for the traverse. It’s Dave’s B-day so he got his choice of leaving a car at Heaton Flats and starting our ...

That is so funny you posted the photo, Jim. I did a Baldy/Iron traverse of the San Antonio Ridge on Saturday and took the same photo of Peak 6857 thinking I would post it for Mark. (Wise hiking minds think alike! ) Now I don't have to. But maybe I'll post a TR of our day.

Beautiful photos, Mark! Excellent narration too. Nice little overnighter except for the zero sleep score. Boy are you good at those selfies. How long can you set your timer for? Oh wait, now I have it... you have a remote timer in your hand!

Thanks for sharing the pix! I was there in July 2009 and it's amazing how little snow there is this year at the same time of year. I had hoped to get up there this summer, but since i don't have another 3-day weekend available, I vicariously traveled there in your TR.

Re: 2012 Basic Winter Mountaineering Clinic
Taco,
I was on B-P on Sunday. On the downclimb as i plunged-stepped, there was only one small section that i did not hit the rocky base. It was still too thin of coverage to want to try glissading, unless you like blood.
Not sure if this week's storm dropped enough to make a difference.

Re: Backbone visit
Nice! You probably made the right call if you didn't have microspikes or crampons. Ice is nothing to fool with. I slipped last weekend on ice near the backbone just below Harwood (with microspikes on) and slid about 25 feet. With 1 inch of hard ice peppered with exposed frozen rocks it was like ...

Re: Help me figure out WHOO this is
Great Horned Owls don't screech. Young GH owls can make a screeching sound. But a true screech comes from a Screech Owl. No longer my friend after they made a nest in my chimney.
