Excellent trip HJ and it's good to see you out there again and so often. You look very happy! Plus then you have...

Burchey,
we began at 7am and finished at 7pm. no speed record as Dave and i always seem to enjoy the journey and take lots of pix. plus the summit and views were so nice that we took a 30+ min summit respite.

Jepson Peak 4.27.11

Last winter as i summited San G from the north ridge i had eyed Jepson and was blown away by the beauty of the mountain and knew i would get there eventually to climb a chute. In January of this year as i viewed Jepson from Charlton Peak, i picked in my mind the north chute with the biggest cornice ...

I know it's not hard to get a walk-up one if you get there early enough, which is my specialty. if you are there on a popular day or weekend (doesn't have to be a holiday) there could be 50 others that show up for the day ahead (walk-in) lottery. happened to me and i pulled #30-something. i got not...

Hines Peak, LPNF 4.21.11

I kinda' felt like Lilbitmo yesterday, since i have been jonesing to do Hines Peak for 2.5 years. Jim (Calicokat) suggested the hike for the day when a forecast o...

Re: East Fork to Narrows water level / conditions

IMHO the Bridge to Nowhere is a great hike on a warm day where you want to get wet to cool you off. hiking in cold wet socks is easier when it's warm. plus, you have at least 10 water crossings and even in a low water year, it's impossible not to get wet. the pools just beyond the bridge are delight...

Unfortunately there is no such thing as uncrowded camping on a beach in So Cal unless you have access to a private beach or as in the one time i camped at NAS Point Mugu when my daughter's friend who lived on base (her dad was an officer) had a camp-out at the base campground near the wetlands. it w...

if i didn't layer in a sleeing bag, i'd be dead by now. i once spent nights shivering in my bag, but i think either i have gotten the hang of the best layering for me or have finally acclimated to cold temps. i returned a 10 degree rated REI down bag when i spent 3 nights freezing cold on Kilimanjar...
