Cool way to spend an afternoon! wish i was close enough to do that. but the traffic between me and Baldy at that hour would not make it feasible.
thanks for the post!

Re: Ontario Peak - 03/21/09 - 3rd Time = 3 Mountains
kathy, regarding the leash... on the Baldy bowl one day i ran into a man that had his axe attached to him by a harness that went over his shoulders and around his chest. much like an animal harness. he made it himself out of webbing. i had not seen that technique before. your post made me think of i...

Re: Ontario Peak - 03/21/09 - 3rd Time = 3 Mountains
hi kathy!
i always switch my axe when my direction changes. SMI drilled that into me when i took their course a few years ago. i don't always use a pole with an axe, but i do sometimes if the slopes isn't too steep. on the steepest, just an axe and some serious concentration.

yamaya, thanks for posting your TR and sending the link to your first hike. good reminder for us all. i did the hike in the reverse of you a couple weeks ago, going up FRC and coming down near the Icehouse saddle. really enjoyed it. i had to self arrest for real for the first time ever on that hike,...

Re: Falling Rock Canyon to Ontario Peak 3/15/09
and Norma hadn’t done a hike in the last several hours. just so happens i had two great opportunities back to back. thanks all! mo, in FRC it seemed we went right at every Y. then at the saddle we gained the ridge on our left to Ontario. walking out to Sugarloaf gave us a nice visual of the ridges ...

Falling Rock Canyon to Ontario Peak 3/15/09
Sunday 3/15/09, with my friend’s Phil and Rich we climbed up Falling Rock Canyon (my first time), went over and visited Sugarloaf Mountain and then climbed the ridge and bowl to Ontario Peak. Beautiful day! The snow in FRC was in great condition for climbing with crampons and we were grateful that t...

Great report! I am reading the book Nanda Devi right now and John Roskelley is concerned about the expedition since the team is not working as a team. here you are Taco, confirming that same discipline missing for you on Snow Creek impacted your feelings of success. you chalk it up to a lesson learn...

Re: Snack Shack Couloir and Thunder Ridge, 15-Mar-2009
Good job Tim! I was on Baldy Bowl very early saturday and never heard a rock fall and then went up Falling Rock Canyon early sunday morning and again not one rock fell. As you know FRC is pretty sheltered and doesn't get much sun. Plus the early morning affords some comfort when all is cold and stil...

know doubt about it, we should all plan a hike together.

Re: Moonlighting on Mt Baldy
hey, who needs sleep? truly, it might take me a couple days to catch up, but it was certainly worth it to miss some and take this midnight hike. it was so cool to hike by the light of the moon. then watching the sunrise and the colors in the bowl made Baldy the prettiest i have ever seen her look. i...

thanx for the TR. looked like a fun day! amazing how conditions can change so rapidly. now Norris can cross-off the highest peak in L.A. county from his international list! i spent heavy change to woosh and schuss an 11,000 ft peak over the weekend. i had a great time but always look forward to my n...
