Re: How to ice-axe self arrest

i attach my axe by a webbing leash i made to my sternum strap with an open gate 'biner. i highly recommend making a leash that you can attach like this. don't waste your $$ on a wrist leash. you will go crazy changing a wrist leash every time you change direction, plus it can also be dangerous. anot...

The old stone foundations you found below the ski hut trail belong to the Gold Ridge Mine. A gold mine that operated from 1897 to 1907. http://www.lagoldmines.com/index.php?page=931613.txt

Fun hike guys! It would be cool to continue up-canyon and see all of the Hellcat wreckage. Especially in a little more snow.

Loved the Alpine Bakery! Yum, yum! Those rolls would have gone good with the Hazelnut Latte that was in my thermos on BP. We gotta' join epicurean forces!

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

I agree with Taco. With no new snow you are going to encounter hard snow and icy conditions down low where the old snow has melted then frozen at night. if you don't mind driving further, the South Fork trail of San Gorgonio does not have any steep stuff to Horse Camp and Poop-out Hill beyond and is...

Re: 20101205 Baden Powell

no ski tracks at all. i looked around for them but too much exposed rock and shrubs to make it fun, yet. the snow on the north side was not firm, still pretty soft. the ridge trail from the V Gap TH switchbacks to the summit was pretty bare. Sun and wind have depleted snow on the true ridge. a good ...

Re: 20101205 Baden Powell

It's early in the season and the snow coverage is decent, at best , so when in doubt head North! Had I not stared at the alpen-glowing peaks last Sunday morning as I was heading from Riverside to Baldy I might have stayed on the 210 freeway. But I found I was unknowingly heading north on I-15. As I ...

Re: Proper ice axe size

Also of consideration is how AWESOME you look just holding it. Try different poses, like The Lumberjack, The Rock Star, The Axe Murderer, etc. You'll find one length that works best for most situations. Color coordination is also key; get an axe in a hue that best complements your current outdoor w...

Re: -15 degrees 11.28.10

Have have a feeling that if you slipped on that stuff, no ice axe would help you. actually, it wasn't boiler plate, so you could have arrested. but it is much more fun to walk on ice with spikes on your feet than have to cut each step with an axe, that's for sure. but then again, sometimes you need...

-15 degrees 11.28.10

Per Jeff S, the air temp was 9 degrees near the summit of Baldy on Sunday but with the "added pleasure" of 40-45mph winds, the wind chill dropped it to -15. Now i know why my hands were so dang cold! Despite the frigid temps it was a beautiful day for a hike up RR with Phil (lik2hi...

Re: Hiking Baldy (and surrounding peaks) in Winter

i have to add my 4cents. it's worth more than 2 cuz i've challenged the forces of nature and know the risks first-hand. microspikes have a use on FLAT snow. but to try and use them on anything steep, is risking your life. Dave G used them last week just cuz he bought them recently (for another jaunt...

As you pointed out that snow condition was very bad with mixed with frozen old snow, iced over, fresh snow, and falling rim ice. Please take crampons, poles, and helmet for your safety. Aye! Seems i chipped a bone in my left elbow from a slip last weekend when i didn't have crampons. It's not bothering ...

Rime Iced Baldy 11.21.10

It's still autumn but it looked a lot like winter on Baldy. Dave G and I headed up from Manker yesterday at 7:30 am in a welcomed snowstorm with nary a soul in sight. Making first tracks and breaking trail all the way to the ski hut was our reward! :D The clouds that brought in the storm that starte...
