Re: Cascade Canyon_Bighorn Mine_Ontario Pk

Sounds ike a fun day to me! :D I had no idea Lapis is mined in Calif. Hope you find the mine eventually. Really like your makeshift axes. Quite creative! You had great weather and views since winter showed its face on Sunday. I can't comment on the hand reaction, any doctors out there?...

Re: Charlton Peak 1.26.11

i'll be taking an avy course soon, so i'll know more (and fear more?) then, but as i hear it the north slopes of San G et al, slide later in the season. there is a reason Mammoth is always blasting their cornices. not good for P.R. to loose customers. as i see it from my limited knowledge and the la...

Re: 1.27.11 - almost halfway up Iron

Given that Baldy is basically clear to the Ski Hut, I would expect the Iron Mt. route to be snow free. There is some steep scrambling on that route, so it would not be my favorite hike with one arm in a cast (or tied behind my back). it was until today! :D not sure how much will keep falling or how...

HJ, i heard about your dad. i'm so sorry. my heart breaks every time i hear of an accident in this sport. as a result, i tend to err on the side of caution because of the reality of the risk involved. in regards to Snowcreek, it has its reward to those who desire it, but i tell you, going up the ski...

Matt,
Funny, i almost did Iron yesterday, but headed a bit south into the SGW. Now you know why John Robinson called, Big Iron, The Mother of All Trails. She will get your attention!

You will be back!!!

Charlton Peak 1.26.11

Took a great little hike yesterday to Charlton Peak with Jim (Calicokat) and guess what?... There's snow in the San Gorgonio Wilderness! :D It's not fresh snow but above Horse Meadows on the South Fork Trail the snow is hanging on. Gotta' love the north facing slopes! We booted it up to South Fork M...

Re: Basic Mountaineering Orientation - Winter 2011

Do you know if SMI provides equipment for those who sign up? One of my hesitations for coming on this sort of thing is that I don't own all of the equipment necessary. I've got an axe and 'pons (vintage 80's stuff), but that's about it. Jim, I looked at their website and i didn't see a mention, but...

Great effort Sam and Patrick on what can be an awesome San Gabriel snow climb when there is plenty of snow. You know i didn't think about the fact that the low snow might make it possible to see airplane wreckage. (hmm... should we try and endure a summer ascent?) I knew coming down FRC was gonna' b...

Do you guys have any tips/ideas on some good, reasonably priced winter courses around here? I know the Sierras definitely do, but I am kind of limited right now, so any thoughts are appreciated! Re: 20100904 Panamint City

No winch necessary back then. I heard storms completey changed the canyon and made it impossible to drive through. I'm sure the winter of '79 was a disaster there. We were told a legend that they had melted silver into a large ball to roll down canyon, and while they were getting it down a huge stor...

:D Welcome to the board! Glad you had a great time and enjoyed the clinic. That day was kinda the beginning of the winter heat wave we are experiencing and the snow was very soft and forgiving.
