Hines Peak via Sisar Canyon is ~22 miles on very easy terrain: a little too much dirt road, but still nice.
norma r, I'd be interested in hearing how your Santa Paula Canyon-Sisar Canyon loop went. I did that loop twice last year and found the ascent of Santa Paula Canyon took much longer than ...

Re: General Conditions
Does anyone know the conditions of the south ridge of Mt. Islip? Specifically, I'm interested in the route from the Bear Creek Trail saddle north of Smith Mt, then north to Highway 39 via Peak 5495, then north along the spine of the ridge to Mt. Islip. From the satellite images it looks like there ...

Re: Stockton Flat - Baldy Notch - Better Route?
Follow-up questions:
Zé, have you done this loop yet?
Any thoughts on creative routes from Gobbler's Knob to Center Mt? The HPS route is to the west of Center Mt, but what about going directly up the ridge from the 3N31/Stockton Flat Rd intersection, then heading west along the ridge to Center Mt ...

Re: Double Iron
hvdrt, nice to meet you yesterday.
Zé, my quads and all other body parts feel fine. But I'm still sleepy. Despite the 1 hour of sleep, Michael hiked like he had 8 hours.
Phil B, the south side of San Antonio Ridge is dry, the north side is still snowy. I couldn't tell the condition of Gunsight ...

Double Iron
Michael T contacted me a week ago to see whether I'd be interested in hiking Iron Mt # 1 from Heaton Flat twice in a day. I am not sure why I accepted. Perhaps I was struggling with guilt, and felt the need to administer the stern and senseless self-punishment that only two ascents of Iron Mt can ...

Re: Old Mt. Wilson Trail
Thanks. The trail was definitely closed on Sunday. I thought perhaps the trail had been washed out, but maybe the city only feared that would happen. Too bad: it's much nicer than the toll road.

Can someone enlighten me as to why the Old Mt. Wilson Trail is currently closed? I couldn't find discussion of this elsewhere in the forum.

Re: Wanted: List of highest California peaks in each range
I recall reading that Evan Rasmussen (whom I have never met) made a list of range highpoints and bagged all of them. Here is the announcement on Summitpost. Bob Burd posted the list on his web site.

Re: hines peak
I agree it's likely to be hot now. I hiked Hines Peak and Topatopa Bluff last spring via Sisar Canyon. The canyon was beautiful and it's a nice peak, although a good portion of the route is on a dirt road.

My apologies if this was already addressed elsewhere in this forum, but does anyone have a first-hand report of the current air quality in the Baldy area?

Re: Olancha Peak 5/30/2009 - FAILed attempt
I was roughly 500 feet below you when you turned around, having started late. I also decided to turn around when the hail started, but I thought everyone (not just you two) was head of me. I thought I'd just walk up a ways to meet everyone, then descend with the group. But then I didn't see anyone ...

Re: Mt. Baldy via the Big Horn Ridge
There is an old bent sign labeled "W12" at Pt. 6388, presumably a relic from the days when a trail ran up the ridge.TacoDelRio wrote: ????

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
From The San Gabriels Vol II by John W. Robinson, 1983, pp 167-168:
Although most parties ascending Old Baldy started from San Antonio Canyon and used either the Bear Flat or Devil's Backbone route, there were also other ways to climb the mountain. Some hikers took the northeast approach from Glenn ...
