Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

how is the coverage on the shady steep area, on the ski hut trail, above the hut but below that ridge from where you can see the other side? It is a jigsaw puzzle of snow and ice and dirt. Those are some of the scattered patches Elwood mentions. You can make it most of the way up on dirt. It can be...

Re: Hiking Baldy (and surrounding peaks) in Winter

But for me, I had a low level of worry all the time. I was like hyper aware of everything, which is good and bad. All these risks weighed on me. But along with a lot of luck, thinking about this stuff is what kept me out of trouble (I think). Still, I kept wondering when my number would come up. :)...

Shin,
It is always nice to see you. Happy Thanksgiving. It must have been windy up there on the ridge.

This video is over towards Thunder Mountain, but all the ridges looked the same, wind blown snow. Also there were some very large ice chunks blowing off the trees.

Re: Iron Mtn FAIL! Sunday 11/14/2010

I am not particularly fond of pain but, for the record, I like Iron Mountain. Talk about solitude! No bus loads of Hiking Club members, often there is nobody at all. And it is quite beautiful once you get to where the big pine trees are. The views are incredible. Here is a picture of what Rick calls...

Re: Iron Mtn FAIL! Sunday 11/14/2010

It is not a failure; it is a "learning experience". It would be nicer if they installed a few water fountains along that trail. It amazes me how the Allison Mine trail seems to disappear more each time I go. You can barely see it anymore. It seems like it might be easier to go up Iron to t...

A very dear deer

I hardly ever see deer in the San Gabriels. This one was near Ontario Peak/Falling Rock Canyon at around 8,300 feet; on Sunday morning.

There was snow on Baldy this weekend, no need for ice tools yet.

Saturday,

The first mile or two was socked in, but it was clear on top.

About halfway up Register Ridge

It sure looks like snow on San G

Ze,

Great time.

Would that be a “wind aided” 2:04? I was up there an hour earlier than you and damn it was windy… and cold. I stayed about 5 seconds and turned around and was home before noon. I guess it is getting time to start packing a coat and hat.

Shin, Well said. Sorry we missed you. Let me know when you plan to do Dawson, I would go again. Like many of us, I enjoy the solitude of hiking alone and often pick trails that are not crowded, but I can go longer with less discomfort if I hook up with someone. We should thank Ryan. It was a pleasure to meet you and nice to have some company, the conversation made the miles go by quicker.
I hope you made it back in time for dinner.
And don't forget to take the rocks out of your pack before your next hike.

Re: Ice House Canyon Trail

The Ranger Station is the one in the Village of Mt Baldy. You can pick up a permit there; I believe they open around 7. Or you can call them the day before and they will leave a permit on the bulletin board out in front. Or you can just go without a permit. I stopped getting permits a few years ago ...

Baldy Dawson Pine and Back

I went looking for the turn off to the old logging road the goes down to Fish Fork from the Dawson Pine Saddle. My plan was to summit Baldy via Ski hut and go down the other side, summit Dawson and follow the trail until I found the cutoff to Fish Fork and then return the same way. On the way up Bal...

Baldy Area Sheep

I often hike up Baldy going from Register Ridge to Harwood to Baldy to West Baldy. A week ago on Sunday the Summit of West Baldy was occupied. A group of mama sheep and I think two young ones. I continued up, staying on the trail, hoping the trail would take me closer, they were wary and moved off. ...

Re: Little Fish Fork Overnighter, 7/2 - 7/3/2009

A few years ago I saw two rattlesnakes doing this. From a distance it looked like two tulips bobbing in the breeze. I thought they were mating, later I read they were males doing some kind of dominance fight. I still wonder how they know that, I sure wasn't sex checking. I stood there for 10 minutes...

I agree, 10 people is probably less than average for a weekend, but not by much. Because the trail is so long you will see few others unless you are leap frogging a group. You are almost assured to spend most of the time alone, but not so alone that if something happened you wouldn't be helped. Ther...

Those cats move with athleticism, it make it easy to see how little chance we humans would have in an attack.

It is the last drop in San Antonio falls.
