Re: A Few Sheep

I don't go looking for sheep, but I do walk a lot of miles some days. Getting a picture of this one was a nice treat. A solo male,

He was wary but curious enough about me to stop and see what I was.

How do I post the pics directly here from flickr? Open the photo in Flickr and use the little drop down button and use: " Grab the HTML/BBCode Copy and paste the code below" The code is right below in a box You can select different sizes right below the box, it is always nice to select a ...

Re: A Few Sheep

I walked up on the same group of sheep this weekend. This time they allowed me to get closer. As Shin said "it pays to hike up early in the morning."

A Few Sheep

I would not have noticed these guys, they were a few hundred yards away and they blend in well, but a passing hiker mentioned he had seen six sheep a little way up the trail so I was looking. There were far enough that I was not sure if this was sheep or just part of the down tree, but I took a pict...

Isn't Cucamonga nice?

I believe the holes are mines. There are some of copper mines in the area but I am not sure if these are them... The lower one isn't very deep I never climbed up to look into the upper one.

Re: Iron mtn. 5-21-11

I guess we can see the "snow conditions" (or lack thereof). HJ I believe Mark took that picture for the exact reason you mention...to show the snow conditions. I think it was ice that fell from the tips of pine needles during the recent rain or a morning dew, there were two patches and on...

Re: Iron mtn. 5-21-11

Dave, The ridge was clear of snow until almost the summit of west Baldy. I will look for photos when I get home tonight. Each time I summit Iron the traverse to Baldy looks a little more doable. On the way up Iron, Mark and I talked about how we could leave a car at Manker at 2 or 3 am one night soo...

Re: Iron mtn. 5-21-11

Great day Mark, thank you for the company. A year ago I did Iron Mountain in May and it snowed, it snowed a lot. Yesterday it was comfortably cool the entire way, even in the sun, but I predict it will be too hot for Iron very soon. We tried to photograph the Amgen race but it just wasn't happening....

Re: Good time to hike 3 T's & Cucamonga & Camp @ Kelly's

Of course this is just a guess, but I think there will still be snow in many places on those trails in mid May.

Jim is correct, the pipes at Kelly were dry last summer.

Re: 20110410 Baldy North Face

An early start and the Mountain was almost deserted for us. It was a good day, very pretty up high, and always a pleasure to see Ryan and Patrick. There was enough snow to posthole once or twice on the way up and glissade down, it will melt fast. Five going up and two going down. Working our way up ...

East Fork Road just before the parking lot at the end. I was in my car and the ringtail crossed the road and then just stood on the fence looking at me while I took out my camera and tried to figure out how to get the flash to work. One flash and it was gone.

Obie, We hiked Pinto Mountain last month. There is no real trail after the first few hundred yards, but your destination is in clear view. There is a map on the board at Turkey Flats showing two different ways to the summit. If you go I have two tips...Don't go in summer and in Pinto Basin distances...

Interesting post Norma. I went up Saturday, started early, and did not see another person until I was about 60% up the bowl, they were at the bottom. Re: Ice House Canyon Trail

Ice house should be fine with only a few patches of snow to Ice House Saddle. From there the North Facing Slopes of Big Horn and Ontario Ridge may be slippery with icy snow, it depends on the temperature. Timber mountain should be ok with only a few patches of snow.

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

Interesting reports. High winds could transport a lot of snow from windward to lee slopes. There is a pretty good chance we could see some windslab building in our local mountains. Be safe! We did not dig a pit, but I agree with what you are thinking, tomorrow after the snow stops, could be dangero...

Dave, Thank you for the information. Since the road was closed we went up Bear Canyon as far as time permitted.
