Re: Prairie Fork - Lupine Road (3N39)

Blue Ridge Road (3N06.1 / .2) was open last weekend from end to end. The Lupine / Cabin Flat spur 3N39 was open at the top. We didn't drive down it to Lupine.

Excellent almost Gorgonio report! Any tracks or critters? We saw a Bobcat coming down towards South Fork last year.

Land of many uses - ARRL Field Day

As any SGMDF amateur radio operators should know; the American Radio Relay League conducted its annual field day event this weekend. Mrs. Elwood and I drove up to Guffy campground on Friday night and camped out. We were lucky to grab the last site ~2145 PDT. Saturday morning we set up our battery po...

Three Points - East Twin - Waterman

Jake hiked from Three Points to the east summit of Twin Peaks, then to the summit of Waterman Mountain yesterday. Flying insects were a major annoyance, as it was hot in the net hat ascending the climbers trail up the twin. He encountered exactly zero other humans all day. Trail Condition: Mostly ve...

Re: Icehouse - Bighorn - Ontario - Kelly's Camp

Thanks for the kind words regarding the pictures. I really do enjoy taking and sharing them. The snow between Icehouse Saddle and Kelly's was just firm enough for comfortable bite in crampons, without having to roll the feet to match grade. Deepest snow up top was around 60" - 72", at Kell...

Icehouse - Bighorn - Ontario - Kelly's Camp

Feeling the need for a San Gabriel's high country stroll, I set out for Ontario Peak yesterday morning. I arrived at a pleasantly quiet Icehouse trailhead parking lot at 0637 and was quickly underway. Between the trailhead and the saddle I passed four hikers, and was myself passed by a couple of tra...

Re: Chantry Flat - Lower Devil's Canyon

There's probably a simple answer as to the identity of the buoyant material in the reservoir and canyon drainage, but I haven't been able to find it. I assume it's related to combustion products on the hillsides, or simply lighter material no longer retained by vegetation. Regarding wildlife; Jake s...

Re: Allison Mine - Allison Gulch

We explored the extents of the upper entrance (just above the trail), as far as we could go without climbing, also both the left and right tunnels of the next level down. These were all easily walkable. There's an amazing amount of trash and stuff seemingly left by visitors.

Allison Mine - Allison Gulch

Turtle and I hiked up to Allison Mine yesterday, then made our way down Allison Gulch back to the East Fork. We were on the hoof around 0630 and back at the Heaton Flat parking area just about 1600. Weather was perfect and we didn't see another soul on trail until reaching the East Fork near Swan Ro...

Re: The Station Fire Thread

Trail Canyon is also one of my favorites. The location of the trailhead mitigates some of the parking risks on Big Tujunga, and it's a great way to head for parts north, like Upper Pacoima Cyn and Messenger Flat. Jake was considering some recon of the area.

It's called Dodder, of the family cuscuta. It's a parasitic plant that chokes out its host. It's also know as "witches hair".

Devil's Punchbowl, almost to Burkhart Saddle

My plan for the day was to hike over Burkhart Saddle, down to Buckhorn Campground, then to return via the same route. Unfortunately, I reached a point short of mile-marker 5 (these count up from Buckhorn) which I deemed to dangerous to cross. I had already donned crampons, and crossed a bunch of fir...
