Nice to see the bears that make such pretty tracks across the South Fork trail occasionally. Thanks for all the hard work setting up your cameras and sharing the results.

Red Box - 2N24.1 at Monrovia Peak

Oblivious to the carnage at Chantry, Jake hiked from Red Box Gap to a point east of the 12 mile (from Rincon Station) marker along the Gabrielino Trail and Rincon Red Box Road. He promised me that he'd describe his hike a little later, but he wanted to get his pictures up. Added verbiage 5/5/2011: J...

Re: Three Points - West Twin- Waterman

I guess that is the normal Bear Creek trail up to the Smith saddle. I was last on that trail 2008/05/31 and have since forgotten those switchbacks. I remember following the creek bed a ways past the primitive trail camp and getting myself disoriented. Thanks for refreshing the memory. https://eispir...

Three Points - West Twin- Waterman

Jake was jonesing for some forest and a little snow. After negotiating the ever-so-convenient Big Tujunga, Upper Big Tujunga ACH bypass, he parked at the nearly empty Three Points lot and was on the hoof at 0625. Jake followed the Waterman Trail, descended to the Twin Peaks saddle at the Buckhorn Tr...

Re: does "ultralight" really matter?

I would have to agree with Mr. Simonov. I like to take what I like to take on longish day hikes; 20 to 30 miles. It is not unusual for me to start one of these with ~ 25 Lbs. of pack, depending upon the likelihood of trailside water. While not particularly scientific, I look at every oz. of gear car...

Vincent Gap - Cabin Flat

Saturday morning, I parked at Vincent Gap and headed down the gulch. I hit the trail around 0710 after the longish haul from Simi Valley. A few hikers were headed up Mount Baden-Powell as I got my gear together. Since I didn't know what to expect from the remaining snow, I opted for crampons. These ...

Bootlegger Canyon - Iron # 2

My evil twin brother Jake has always been intrigued by forest service road 4N33's circuitous route from Arrastre Canyon up to Messenger Peak. He'd seen it during several sojourns on the PCT to North Fork Saddle and beyond. Yesterday's beautiful weather was all that was needed to get him into our Jee...

Re: Bobcat and wabbit

That's cute! I saw a couple of smallish rabbits during my lunchtime Verdugos hike on Friday. They were in the brush beside the long firebreak up Mt. Thom from the Brand Library side. The first one got a bit concerned when I took out the camera, so I didn't bother photographing.
