Mr. Hike Up: "How was the descent down Winston Ridge into the creek and up to the road 5N04.3? That has always looked very steep and overgrown to me - although the fire probably cleared it out quite adequately Very Happy .Figured following the ridge down the middle of Squaw Cyn. looked easier -...

Waterman Mountain & Winston Ridge
Last Tuesday, giving in to a serious jonesing for our beloved San Gabriel's, I played hookey from work and headed for Three Points. Temperature was a blistering 34F at 0615 when I hit the trail. In respect for the snow, I lashed the axe and crampons to my pack thought they turned out to be unneccess...

Re: SR-39 (San Gabriel Canyon Road)
It would appear to me that someone has deleted a message that reflects an understandable but absolutely wrong interpretation of my comment. An urban burrito is simply slang for one of the multitude of soiled diapers left trailside, roadside, creekside, etc. Other than the ethnic specificity of the f...

Eaton Saddle - Devore - Chantry - Wilson - Idlehour - Lowe
Saturday morning Turtle and I met up at Eaton Saddle. We were on foot by 0430. Following a very brief miscued walk up the road (my fault), we were headed down Valley Forge trail under the light of our headlamps. The stream crossing at Falls Canyon was ever so slightly confusing due to the the monoto...

Red Box - Barley Flats - Devore - Wilson
During today's performance, the role of "Hiker" normally played by Elwood will be performed by his evil twin brother Jake. Saturday morning, Jake headed up the beginning of the Strawberry Peak trail from Red Box, then continued eastward along the former roadbed to Barley Flats. Though over...

I woke up yesterday (Labor Day) from a splitting overnight headache and couldn't decide whether to go to work or to go enjoy the San Gabriels. Since this is the SGMDF and not the EDAWF (Elwood's day at work) you might guess which I chose. I had such a great time on Saturday's Islip Saddle - South Fo...

Islip Saddle - South Fork - Vincent Gap - PCT
This past Saturday morning, Turtle and I met up at 0430 along Angeles Crest Highway in La Canada Flintridge and headed up to Islip Saddle. At 0524 we were on the hoof headed down the South Fork trail. We knew that there would be water en-route, so we each started the day carrying around three liters...

Very nice report and pictures. Especially liked the snake pictures. A bit far north for them, but your crotalus looks an awful lot like a c. ruber ; the Red Diamondback.

Saturday morning I got to hike the five peaks: Sugarloaf, Ontario, Bighorn, Etiwanda, and Cucamonga with one of the nicest bunches of people you could ever want to share the day with. Many thanks to all who hiked and posted. After leaving some cars (including my 320,000 mile minivan beater) in La Ve...

Re: Hikemageddon - Smith Ridge Fail
I haven't been on 1N34 since before our wet, wet winter. Last year it was mostly passable from Deer Canyon to Joe Elliot (AKA Big Tree) though with some difficulty. The brush has really taken over in spots, and there are several washouts that require a little climbing to get across. West of Deer Can...
