Re: Too hot to do anything but lay around

Awesome footage Ms. Magic! A vivid reminder of the wonderful critters that share their forest with us.

Re: Pleasant View and Winston Ridges

I usually park at the edge of this flat over here. Most recently all the hive remnants were in what looked like a boulder-ringed fire pit. From here it's a short, steep climb to the saddle at the benchmark, then East up PVR. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/www.electricskates.com/Pix/Other21/H...

Amazing route, Mr. Taco. I've been on some of that Mine Gulch stuff and it can be pretty scary.

Re: Pleasant View and Winston Ridges

The couple of times I've done this, I typically aim to hit the creek near the bottom of Squaw Canyon. There is an amazingly brushy spot north of this that obscures the view of your point "E". It may well be possible (passable) to follow the suggested "D" to "E" route th...

Re: Pleasant View and Winston Ridges

In retrospect, I misnamed the creek. It's actually the fork of Little Rock Creek flowing down from the Eagle's Roost area. It (and the PCT) passes Rattlesnake Spring, thus my confusion. 5N04 is closed to public traffic. I have seen Forest Service vehicles on it periodically. It's rare that I see any...

Re: Pleasant View and Winston Ridges

Thanks for the thoughtful comments. I've fought the poodle before, and today should be the last day of maddening itching. The strangest symptom though is continued sensitivity in the effected areas, heightened by a hot water (washing, shower, bath) of all things. I am militant about carrying a ham r...

Pleasant View and Winston Ridges

Saturday morning I parked the Jeep near the beehive site above Cima Mesa in Juniper Hills. My original plan was to hike Pleasant View Ridge to Mt. Willamson, then return via the same route. The western third of PVR was pleasant as always, though someone seemed to think that the easy-to-follow route ...

Re: Middle Fork - Etiwanda - Cucamonga

Hey Zach!

I'm not sure that there's a satisfactory route all the way down to the creek from Etiwanda. I've been on the overgrown trail between Joe Elliot and Etiwanda several times though. The topo lines look perilously close together on any contiguous route all the way down.

Re: Middle Fork - Etiwanda - Cucamonga

The scree and talus laden parts of this hike are fairly short. I don't recommend them for newbies, those who are faint of heart, or prone to vertigo. One of these segments is reinforced by a log held to the hillside by fairly small re-bar. Kudos to the brave trailbuilders who pounded these into plac...

Middle Fork - Etiwanda - Cucamonga

Sunday morning, I bounced the jeep along the rutted road from Scotland to the Middle Fork trailhead parking lot. I was on the hoof in the 38F breeze at 0655. There were a few folks camped around Stone House and Commanche, though I saw nobody on the trail until arriving at Icehouse Saddle around 1011...

Wrightwood - Mount San Antonio

Sunday morning, I parked at the end of the public portion of Acorn Drive up in Wrightwood and set foot for Old Baldy's summit. Despite a warm weather forecast, temperatures were pleasantly cool all day. I started up The Acorn Trail heading for Blue Ridge at 0700. The Pacific Crest Trail took me from...

Manker Flat - Mount San Antonio

Sunday morning I drove up to Manker for a hike to Old Baldy's summit. The road was completely clear and dry, despite one erroneous sign demanding drive-wheel chains. I arrived at a nearly empty parking area at 0615 and hit the trail in the toasty 26F weather. The Ski Hut Trail is mostly clear of sno...

Pacoima Canyon, 31 October 2010. Maybe burned or washed out as a result of the Station Fire. Great footage, as always Ms. Magic. Though cost-prohibitive, perhaps a stealthy trailcam-trailcam. Followed by a SGMDF "Most Wanted" topic with pictures. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/www....

Re: your choice of knife for your trip...what and why?

I am on my second Columbia River M16-14T. I never hike without it. Though not a big fan of Tanto blade shape, this one works for me. It's got very smooth (nylon or teflon bushing) single-hand operation, very positive lock, and great voice. I committed the cardinal sin of trying to turn a stuck screw...

Cute Lynx Rufus. I saw a good sized one on the trail above the Brand Library two weeks ago. Also saw an adult Gopher Snake on one of these trails yesterday. Not bad for mid-winter.
