Happy Thanksgiving All

Among the things I'm thankful for is this group of fine folks who share my love of our mountains. Among the things I'm looking forward to is crossing paths with y'all on the trail.

Warmest Regards,
"Elwood"

Same camera: Sony RX100 (mke1). I got lazy and used the batch scaler in FSViewer instead of the usual macros in photoshop. Thanks for the kind words.

North Devil's Backbone almost Fish Fork loop

As much as I hike our beloved San Gabriel Mountains, I've only made it to the upper Fish Fork camp a couple of times. I desired to follow the North Backbone - Pine - Dawson route and tread the trail that I've only coveted on topographic maps. I left the Jeep in the turnout on Blue Ridge just past th...

Very lovely report and pictures. Thanks for sharing them with us all. FYI, I was on Mt. Lowe, San Gabriel, and Disappointment the same morning. Came up from the Cobb Estate.

1) Superb video, thanks for posting it.

2) Probably not going to share this video with my vegan wife.

3) Gonna make sure to move once in a while whilst sleeping with the cats on my bed.

Dillon Divide - Pacoima Canyon - Indian Ben Saddle, Loop

Last Saturday was a day of contrasts. It began with the sheer elation of walking a San Gabriel Mountains trail on a warm summer morning. It ended with my arrival at the car at 2230 to head home to a very annoyed Mrs. Elwood. The balance of the day spanned from moments of hiking serenity through mino...

Now that you mention it, I took a drink from LJ Spring the other day, turned to my hiking partner and asked "does this taste Rhodesian to you?"

I'm embarrassed to say that I've never seen the Flume Canyon spring, nor knew of its existence. I've been camping up there for years though.

FT-817 of course. I've only ever worked QRP on Blue Ridge with a G5RV hauled high into the trees.

Vincent Gap - Prairie Fork - Blue Ridge Loop

I played hooky from the madness at work on Tuesday the eighth, and took a delightful little hike in the Vincent Gap area. I rolled out of Simi around 0430, arriving at the Gap just before 0620SHT (standard hiking time). There was a young couple in the lot gearing up for what looked like an overnight...

Re: Allison Mine Trail

I hiked from Heaton to the mine and back two Saturdays ago. The mine trail is passable, but not for the faint of heart. There are a few short slides that have to be crossed gingerly. A long stretch of the trail West of the mine is bybassed ABOVE the actual trail to get around some fairly robust over...

If you haven't done this already, check out pictures of the original Los Angeles Aqueduct. Many of the huge canyon-crossing siphons are constructed of riveted pipe section and still in service. I believe they managed to "deflate" one accidentally during construction.

Re: Ken Burton's Nightmare Before Oakwilde

It was too tough to discern the frog subspecies. The tenor section was very strong, though the buffo profundi were certainly holding their own. Sadly I forgot to bring the AN/AVS-9 (night vision rig), and the thought of environmental disaster caused by shining a headlamp on the poor critters was ove...

Ken Burton's Nightmare Before Oakwilde

I was sitting at my desk yesterday morning enjoying a bagel and cup of coffee, as well as the quiet of the closed office. One glance at the weather forecast for the day convinced me that the front range would be a far more satisfying place to spend Presidents' day than would work. The parking area a...

Middle Fork Lytle Creek - Cucamonga

Though work and other committments have been conspiring to keep me off of our beloved trails of late, nothing was going to keep me from hiking yesterday. I left Simi just before 0500 and arrived at the Highlands of Scotland (CA) around 0620. 2N58 was as horrible as ever, though no match for the Rubi...

Re: Weirdos, Shell Casings, and Mendenhall Peak

FYI, I reported a few years ago about stumbling on unambiguous evidence of a grow operation just across Pacoima canyon in Dorothy Canyon. I had hiked down from Magic after the fire. There were large tangled masses of irrigation tubing that had been washed down Pac.
