Re: Late in season rattler

Alas, the little rattler slithered away before I could ask it when it was born. I also misspelled 'Crotalus' (as in Crotalus Oreganus) in the original post and the editing window has elapsed.

Re: Late in season rattler

This snake is a juvenile. I don't think that its pattern has had a chance to develop / distribute along the length of its body yet.

Re: Late in season rattler

I think the lizard was already still. Oddly I didn't realize what I'd captured until reviewing the pictures later.

Late in season rattler

I was surprised to see this little Crotalus on the Wildwood Canyon trail in the Verdugos yesterday. If you look closely you'll see the tail of some hapless lizard sticking out of its mouth. Lamborghini wasn't mine by-the-way; wrong color.

Re: Uhhhhh anyone been up Baldy lately?

I went up this morning. Ski Hut Trail is a bit snowy and icy just below Jabba (the hut). The refrozen slippery stuff is pretty much continuous across the bowl and upward. Crampons or spikes are highly recommended past the Ski Hut.

Re: Camping at Cabin Flat or Lupine Campground? Other good hike in camping around there?

I've always been a fan of Mine Gulch trail camp. It's basically a bench at the confluence of Prairie Fork, top of the East Fork, and of course Mine Gulch. There are a few remnants of structures from more popular days, though NO remaining amenities. There's always water nearby. It's a pure reverse hi...

I had an awesome time celebrating this auspicious occasion with an equally awesome crew. Although I didn't take many pictures, I managed to get some decent ones: https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/www.electricskates.com/Pix/Other36/DSC05355.png Fearless leader, Mount Harwood. https://eispiraten....

Re: Dillon Divide - Pacoima Canyon - Indian Ben Saddle, Loop

It's about 4.2 miles from Dillon Divide on Little Tujunga Canyon Road. Approximate coordinates (allowing for the 7 minute delta between picture's EXIF data and GPS time) are N 34° 21' 43.45" W 118° 19' 54.54" . It's about 100M East of the Laurel Canyon drainage and about a meandering kilom...

Interesting note regarding trenching. For what it's worth, the only bike I saw on Manzanita was in fact riding the trench.

Re: Islip Saddle - South Fork - Vincent Gap - PCT Loop

I'm not sure that I understand how 'TOPO' v9 interpolates the gpx / position data from my GPS. Although it sure felt like 11K, max - min was only ~ 4,741 ft. Whenever it's time to replace my hiking camera (I usually get around five years out of one), I look for the most affordable good glass in a po...

Islip Saddle - South Fork - Vincent Gap - PCT Loop

On Saturday morning, Mrs. Elwood unchained me from the shipping container where she keeps me and occasionally douses me with Clif Bars and Shot Bloks. I took advantage of my newfound freedom (actually she had to work and didn't mind my disappearing to the San Gabriels for the day) and hightailed it ...
