made one in the backyard when I was younger, maybe 100 ft long.
I can think of some exposed ridges that would make an excellent zip line

nice try. did you see much PO?
there are some old trails that head up Fish canyon north of the falls, I wonder how it would be to descend from the fire roads above and head south to try to get to the falls. that could prove to be "interesting"

I did meet one ranger once over on top of Waterman maybe a year ago. I told him that I was shocked to see a ranger out on the trail. He laughed, and said something like "yeah, I know we have that reputation, but I'm not like that." HJ yeah that was probably the little bully ranger. at lea...

absolutely. i want this to be a reference for the whole range of 'hikes' including the extreme ones, which need to be displayed in the right context, i.e., people need to know that the hike is no joke and may pose danger to them.

so I added some avg grade and total "equivalent miles" stats. this helps give a feel for the overall exertion, what steepness and how much energy. it will need some explaining but it will be a good stat IMO

Re: The SoCal Hike Project
What caught my eye about that site is how every hike includes a listing of quantitative information that might serve as a partial model for what you are thinking of doing. yeah that's true. I was planning on adding objective / subjective ratings for difficulty and "scenery". I'm a bit war...

burnt peak trail ok so looks like that trail comes from the SW and wraps around the east side of burnt peak, looking at satellite I can see the trail in some spots, but hard to say that it is clear all the time. The fire break ridge route that veers off from the trail and heads north to the peak lo...

Re: Mt. Baden Powell Plus 3 On Jul3
Hi V,
Last summer we started down the trail from Windy Gap that meets up with a fire road that heads up to S Hawkins. The trail is indeed in disrepair but it does make it more fun. We went of the trail / fire road a bit more than needed, if you stay on it's not bad at all.

hey if they try to use it maybe you can radio us real time coordinates and we can hunt them down. then we can make'em clean the rock debris off the 39...indefinitely. sort of like that Sisyphus guy.

that upper section is terrible! I get it hasn't been taken care of in a while, but when I was riding up there I could hear constant rockfall- I mean the road is right next to vertical cliffs cut out of Islip, it's never going to be "stable" unless they further disfigure the mountain above ...

Re: The SoCal Hike Project
great tips! thanks. the database accumulation is not a problem like you said...there's only space for so many columns on the screen, so I'm thinking to have a few different pages that differ in some of the sortable elements displayed. Make sure to keep the basics and important ones on each, but swit...

Re: The SoCal Hike Project
What would be really cool is if this was all backed by a database, so that quantitative information (length of hike, elevation gain, difficulty rating, etc) can be captured in fields and you could build custom, sortable tables of hikes. yeah that is what I was thinking. It is backed by a "data...

awesome Tim! so that gully looked like it had brush, but how bad was it? did you go all the way up to intersect the VC trail?
as for that lost girl, i remember her claiming she felt like "she was on a trail, then it got steeper and steeper on some dirt ground." very descriptive!
