Re: supplementation for hiking?

yes I agree when you are mostly aerobic (like long hikes), then the glycogen disparity issue isn't as large. I mention only, like in the blog, that people sometimes tend to start out way too fast, and there is a significant cost to that. as for the mile record, glycogen is mostly stored well in adva...

Re: supplementation for hiking?

if one goes at a pace of 70% their max HR for 5 hours... and another person goes at a pace of 85% of their max HR for 3 hours... is it reasonable to think that the the second person may need to eat more, citing their likely depleted glycogen stores? In my own experience, I've found this to be the p...

Re: supplementation for hiking?

Is being glycogen depleted what makes the big muscles in my legs/thighs feel week on long uphills? i dont feel hungry, but my legs do! lol -so if i eat, even just a lil, then my muscles feel happier more or less, yes. there could be other reasons for fatigue, but glycogen depletion is a biggie. eve...

Re: supplementation for hiking?

yeah I don't even eat anything when I hike. I find if I'm not glycogen depleted, I don't feel the need or hunger too, and will summit before breaking out any snacks.

Only time I would ever care about supplementation if it was a 'race'. Otherwise my conditioning alone is good enough.

(GU) It's the stuff dreams are made of. Hammer Gel>>>>>>> Gu Gu sucks. Gu has caffeine (some do) which dehydrates. Gu is gross. Hammer is good tasting. Hammer is made up of puree. Hammer is wonderful. actually they've shown that caffeine does not dehydrate you. but it depends on context. I think th...

what timing. I'm on the hunt in Colombia right now.... more seriously caffeine, at the very least, reduces the rate of perceived exertion (less pain at certain pace, or go faster) long hikes, you could intake a few hundred calories of fast acting carbohydrates per hour into blood (like GU, gat...

Re: does "ultralight" really matter?

as a basic approximation, think about the % change in total weight (bodyweight + backpack weight), and use that as an estimate in the change in calories burned, as well as a change in speed. Let's say its a 3% change. A 3% increase of a 4 hr ascent is ~ 7 min. Is that 7 min worth dropping 5 lbs of s...
