Re: Hikemageddon - Smith Ridge Fail
Hi, I've been lurking around your fine forum for some time when I found this thread concerning my neck of the woods. The gate at the junction of 1N34 and Lytle Creek Road typically opens Sept.1st for hunting and recreation, however, it its subject to closure when snow, rain or other conditions warr...

Re: Clamshell, Rankin, Monrovia, Pine (NHPS)
oh yes, the ridge up to Clamshell was my first off trial route, mostly because I read it on the HPS and thought it was a well established trail. the brush was pretty annoying, but now that I've seen worse, it's not too bad really. I thought the loop (w/o Pine) is a decent route in the winter actually.

yeah I was emailing with Peter Doggett who added those two peaks, I suggested Triplet Rocks and Big Horn Ridge, but apparently peaks have to be reasonably easy to get to!

New HPS peaks in San G's are...
new peaks apparently have formed in the San Gabriels. I didn't study geology but never thought mountains could form so quickly! ![Wink ](./images/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif)
before clicking the link, take a guess at where the 2 new peaks are. were you right?

Re: Water filters
bumping this old one.
Even though I usually just drink the water directly, I'm considering buying a filter (pump or gravity).
Suggestions? Interested in durability and ease of use.

Re: Bear Creek Trail (Smith Mountain)
i think it might have been, until may 16th. but who cares about a few days? but actually thinking about it I think bear creek itself was the boundary, so you could hike down to it, just stay a few feet above the creek or you might be struck by lightning but starting may 16th, but here is the updated...

Re: what pack to use with a back-injury (lumbar? or...??)
http://www.rei.com/product/795509/rei-d ... -waistpack I have this for trailrunning / shorter dayhiking, I think works pretty well. I think the main question would be how much storage space you need. in the main compartment i can fit wallet, phone, camera, cliff bar, with a little space left over.
