Re: Prairie Fork - Lupine Road (3N39)

According to the Big Pines Ranger Station on their Facebook page it is supposed to open sometime this week. My son & I hiked Pine Mtn on Saturday and it was not open then - we had to park at Guffy.

Adventure Pass Extension?

A few years ago when the forest was closed due to fire danger they extended the expiration date for all adventure passes for a few months. Does anyone know if they have done the same thing this year due to the fires? Mine expired end of May and of course being the cheapskate I am would not want to w...

Re: Vincent Gap Trail (Mt. Baden-Powell)

At one point it started to seem like snowshoes would be a good idea, but it is definitely melting fast now so it could change a lot by next week. I bailed off the trail pretty early and headed straight up the mountain, but I did pass a some hikers on my way down that had made it pretty far without c...

Sorry if this post is too late - just got back on here today. I didn't start hiking until about 9:00 AM so if you get an earlier start you might not run into the same degree of issues.

Re: Vincent Gap Trail (Mt. Baden-Powell)

This is true. Messed around up there yesterday morning. Had the crampons on early, only went about 1/2 way up because as it warmed up I started to posthole like crazy and I wasn't in the mood for that.

Re: South Fork Trail (Big Rock Creek)

Also, about half way between South Fork campground and Devil's Chair there are a couple of "well used" campsites in Holcomb Canyon near the creek, which also has mucho water right now.

Re: South Fork Trail (Big Rock Creek)

I've hiked the portion from South Fork Campground to the Devil's Chair twice in the last month or so and it was fine - no snow. The portion from Islip Saddle down to Big Rock Creek may have snow, however since it doesn't see the sun as much. Big Rock Creek has mucho water.

Re: 05/24/09 East Fork Zoo - Stupidity is Illegal

I don't mind them using the bridge, not all, especially since they give us access to cross over it. I have not bungee jumped with these folks, but yes, it's a rush. I just know there's been some disagreement on the use of the bridge for bungee jumping - didn't want to start a discussion over right/...

Re: 05/24/09 East Fork Zoo - Stupidity is Illegal

I guess they need a proofreader, eh? Those signs evidently were put up by Bungee America since that's their phone number. Regardless whether you agree with them using this bridge or their methods of doing it, I highly recommend bungee jumping - it's a rush like no other. And man, that's a lot of ten...

The bridge has now been poured and is awai...

Re: Vincent Gap to Bighorn Mine to Prairie fork and back 11/14/08

I'm no expert and I'm not a "wreck chaser", but I can say that this wreckage has been there for a pretty long time. I first came upon it sometime around 1988, but friends told me it was there long before that. I always stop by to look at it when I'm in this area but I've never analyzed it ...

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

Update as of Sat. 11/8: Four girders have been moved and put into place, with #5 going in on Monday. #6 will be delivered on Wednesday and assembled at the construction site (evidently the curing time isn't as long as previously thought, or it will finish curing at the site). The contractor says the...

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

The replacement girder will apparently take months to make, putting the project on hold till spring. Yes, but there are 5 more (yet undamaged) girders sitting there waiting to be put in place also. So there was talk on the Wrightwood forum that they might try to go ahead and continue setting those ...

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

Back to Hwy 2: evidently they got on the ball and got the fallen girder removed from ACH already, but they also removed a bunch of other construction supplies, including the office shed, which insinuates that they're probably done messing with the project until spring.

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

Jackhammer it to pieces? Surely, there's a better way. :( Yeah - I know. They're saying that if they try to use a crane the girder (being so damaged) will crumble and fall apart, and this would be dangerous. A few people have uploaded photos on the Wrightwood website I referenced. They didn't make ...

The escape route deal for Wrightwood would be real helpful in winter, with the friggin' ludicrous traffic y'all get due to skiiers and snowboarders and such. I hate getting stuck behind that. Chews up a few hours just sitting in traffic, slowly going back towards the 138... Oh, don't even get me st...

Re: Mt Baden-Powell the easy way, 7 Sep 2008

how many hikes are missed just from the closed section of the 2? Getting to the other side of the closed section doesn't seem like a big deal if you are coming from the La Canada end, you could just drive around 210-15 etc in about the same amount of time... I'm coming out of lurker status for this...
