Re: Mt. Baldy trails closed and another death

I have some more info on the death in Ice House Canyon. This press release is the official account: http://local.nixle.com/alert/5583422/ Near the same and in the same area, five stranded hikers were airlifted out. One of the five stranded hikers wrote his account here: http://www.wildcalendar.com/?...

Mt. Baldy, rescues and more rescues: 06-Feb-2016

With our terrible drought, I haven't been mountaineering in years. I also haven't hiked much. The last time I was on Baldy was about a year ago. My friend and I decided to check out Baldy yesterday. It turned out to be a crazy day to come back. We got started on the trail at around 8am. There were a...

Re: Hope this isn't one of us...

I'm sorry to hear about this fatality. Vietnamese families are very close. His parents must be devastated. Back in 2009, I climbed down the north side of the Devils Backbone. Here was my trip report: https://eispiraten.com/about1333 It is very steep back there. If the victim had an ice axe, he would...

Re: Eaton Canyon Trails

Thanks outwhere for the link to the full video. The girl fell from the north side of the Razorback. Apparently this happened late in the day, so my guess is they were on the way back and coming back down. I don't know why they were so far below the ridge. Either one of them fell earlier and ended up...

Re: Eaton Canyon Trails

I was watching the morning local news today on KABC and they showed some video of a young women falling from the ridge yesterday, just as the signs were being put up. The video was pretty dramatic. The women was on the side of the cliff, well below the ridge. She lost her footing and quickly fell be...

Re: Eaton Canyon Trails

I went up to the 2nd waterfall this past weekend. I did not go the exact way in the YouTube videos. I debated whether to post this TR, but I wanted to give some observations. It is impossible to accidentally wander onto this route. The beginning is not a side trail that you just stumble upon. To be ...

Re: Strawberry Peak Routes

Tim, wasn't this the day you realized (when back at the trailhead) you left your GPS on the peak and hiked back up to get it? lol Haha, this was that day! You have a good memory Zé. The worst part was not knowing where I actually lost it. It could have been anywhere on that trail. Or someone could ...

Re: Mt. Baldy, gliders and missed opportunities

I remember the look on your face trying to climb to BHR. I'm pretty sure those hike helped burn you out mentally (oh and John Q, Ofir, etc...). But see it's still on your mind! It does bother me a little that I never completed that route. Remember how I was 45 minutes late? I ran all that wa...

Re: Strawberry Peak Routes

Tim (or anyone else) - It might be a stupid question but how would you downclimb those sections? Would you face the rock or face away from the rock? I've always faced away from it for whatever reason, but it'd be cool to hear another opinion. Everyone has a different style and preference, but I wou...

Thanks everyone! The recovery time did take longer but I'm feeling good. This is the most motivated I've felt in a while. I'm going to try to keep this going because I heard a rumor cute girls like to hang out on Big Horn Ridge ;)

Re: Strawberry Peak Routes

Here are some photos from 2008. If I remember right, the rock climbing isn't that bad because there are a lot of foot and hand holds and the ledges are pretty wide. However, Hikeup is correct, there is some exposure in spots that might mess with your head. Only a few stretches of climbing are close ...

Mt. Baldy, gliders and missed opportunities

Years ago, I was a pretty serious hiker. But after a while, I started to lose interest and eventually stopped. Hiking was my main form of exercise, so with that gone I really got out of shape. I tried hiking Baldy a few months ago and barely made it to the Ski Hut without passing out. What has happe...

Re: Adventure Pass

Even though I hate the Adventure Pass, it currently is law so I follow the law and pay for a pass. Back in the day of Fee Demo, they were testing people's "willingness" to pay by issuing a Notice of Non-Compliance (NON) to anyone not displaying a pass. This was not a real ticket, but it so...

Re: Adventure Pass

I hate the Adventure Pass with a passion. I've been against it since back in the day when it was called Fee Demo. I used to talk to other hikers about it and to my surprise some were actually okay with it. Their rationale was: "If it will help the local forest, I'm okay with paying a little.&qu...

Re: Trail Sign Graveyard

I hiked up the Ski Hut trail the other week (first time in a really long time) and noticed the same thing about the signs. Every sign has been cut off, not just unbolted. The cut looks pretty clean, almost as if it was done with a power tool. At first I thought whoever did this just wanted to get ri...

Re: Lets talk sleeping pads

That Instaflator is pretty clever! I went to my local Leslie's Pool Supply store and they had them on clearance for $.99. Mine weighed 1.6 oz by itself and 1.8 oz total with the adapter piece that goes on the sleeping pad valve. It took me 1 and 1/2 length of Instaflator to fill up my Pacific Outdoo...

They called off the search a few days ago: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2 ... opped.html

He probably was never in the Verdugos and took off somewhere else. Or they already got to him and he'll be "missing" forever.

Re: Skyline trail to Long Valley

Nice job, Matt. That was an interesting approach you had to the hike--bivying halfway though it. If I did that, I don't think I'd have the will power to wake up! I agree that in the grand scheme of extreme hikes, Skyline isn't really too bad if you're a very prepared hiker with a lot experience doin...

Re: What PLB do you use, if you use one

I have a McMurdo FastFind PLB. I got it a several years ago for around $200. At the time, it was smallest, least expensive PLB with GPS you could get--two of my top priorities. Doug from Equipped.org tested it extensively and it gave it good marks. That was good enough for me! The reason why I didn'...

Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)

I passed through Kelly Camp last week. I'm not sure about the pipe but there was a large group of college aged campers there and they said they were getting water from a stream just north of the campsite. I didn't check it out to confirm, but I do recall there is a small seasonal stream north of the...

Re: Wilderness Crest Trail (Cucamonga Peak)

Thanks Matt. Even that picture helps because it's showing the north side of Ontario and based on that, chances are in a few weeks any snow won't be an issue. But I might do a recon hike anyway and if I do, I'll report back with conditions.

Thanks again!

Does anyone have experience with the Benchmade 556 Mini-Griptilian or the Benchmade 551 Griptilian ? Mike, I have a Mini-Griptilian with a 2.9" combi blade. I bought it back in 2005 for only $55. I'm not surprised the price has gone up so much, thanks to those soul-less bastards at the Federal...

Yep, I've awoken from my slumber. I hibernate in the summer and now it's time to continue my series on random ridges :) I still remember that night on July 4th. Man, I've never booked it down a trail that fast! A few other signs also got tagged. Baden-Powell use to be relatively immune to this, but ...

Mt. Baden-Powell: 10-Sep-2011

I haven't hiked in a really long time so I took a stroll up one of my favorite short-and-sweet trails: Mt. Baden-Powell from Vincent Gap. The weather was great: nice and chilly with some light rain and thunder on the summit. I met only a handful of people on the trail, but on the summit there was a ...
