Topo Apps
I am looking for a topo app for my android phone (Galaxy S8). There are a lot in the Play Store. Want to get a good one. Any recommendations? I don't mind paying for one, especially if it keeps ads off. Need to be able to download the maps onto my phone for when there is no cel service (frequently)....

Re: La Tuna Fire
I take it you're not a fan of the "confine and let burn out" policy? Prescribed burns are one thing...this is the whole other story of the modern hiker environmentalists. If this is what success is, and the policy remaining from the Station Fire....convert the Verdugos to mansions....excu...

This was shot Saturday morning from my home in Shadow Hills. We are ok and our house survived and it's all due to people like the crew of the 735. Thank you!

Time between posts?
Posted some pics in the Other ranges/Out of state section to test how to upload pics. It was super easy! But when I went to comment as such, I received the message that I "cannot post so soon after posting." Just FYI.

Boards like this one in the Sacramento area?
Hi,
I may be moving to Sacramento for a job and was curious if anyone knew of any message boards like this one in the Sacramento area. Looking at Google Earth there appears to be a lot of hiking opportunities relatively close by.
Thanks!

Water AND Snow at Switzers
Took my little buddy, Ozzy, up to Switzers for a walk today. Was curious as to how well the water was flowing up there. Well, the water is a flowin' and it's been a snowin'! Should be a good year in the San Gabes! Here are some pics: https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm1.staticflickr.com/293/...

Re: Winter Creek, Hoegees, and Loos
Here is a copy of the email I just sent to the EPA: Good day, I have recently become aware of the closing of the pit toilets at Hoegee's Campground in the Angeles National Forest. I have attached a photo of the notice that has been tacked upon the, now locked, door of the outhouse. As a hiker/backpa...

Re: Winter Creek, Hoegees, and Loos
I went online and located the contact information for the director of the Southern California Office of the EPA's District 9: Steven Leonido-John Director (213) 244-1804 ( leonido-john.steven@epa.gov ) I am in the process of sending an email questioning the logic of this decision. I would suggest, i...

Re: Bluecut Fire
I would opine that episodes such as this have been occurring since the San Gabriels were first formed. Do you think the excessive (by human standards) build up of fuel has only occurred in the last 100 years? I would imagine there have been long stretches of relatively little fire activity to huge i...

Re: Water flow in Big Santa Anita Canyon
So I did the Winter Creek loop from Chantry yesterday. The creek is flowing, though it goes underground in several places, usually above the check dams. I had forgotten how nice that area is during the week. Plenty of parking, no crowds, though the rangers were on high alert to keep the kids from bu...

Water flow in Big Santa Anita Canyon
My kids got ol' dad a new pack for Father's Day and I was thinking of breaking it in on a short overnighter to Hoagees.
How is the water flow in the canyon, both Winter Creek and Big Santa Anita? Haven't been up there yet this season.

Switzers: No More Pools
Took a hike from the picnic area down to the confluence of the Arroyo Seco and Bear Canyon. Lots of flowers and greenery. A beautiful Spring day. Water was flowing through the creek, which due to heavy rains this winter, is now filled with silt. All the way down to the confluence and most certainly ...
