Verdugos, La Tuna & Wildwood Fire Road Questions

Happy New Year! The family and I recently moved from Burbank to Shadow Hills, where we have access to the Fond Family Open Space Preserve. The views are fantastic and the solitude is incredible. I have been trying to plot a way that I could hike from my house in Shadow Hills to my old neighborhood in...

Lost All Of My Gear in A Fire

On June 20th this year our garage, and everything in it, burned to the ground. In just a few short minutes, 30+ years of camping, fishing and assorted recreational gear went up in flames. Everyone was fine, but we didn't have insurance. I am bummed that the backpack I had finally dialed-in is gone, ...

Re: Water still running at Mt Lowe camp?

There is a water source at the Mt. Lowe Trail Camp. If you go up the hill above and to the right of the retaining wall (the last remnant of Ye Olde Alpine Tavern) you will encounter a large water tank. Walk up around the right side of the tank and you will see water coming right out of the side of t...

Re: Those poisenous purple flour plants all over

Ahh, Poodle Dog. I got it really bad last year on the stretch of the Gabrielino trail from Red Box to Switzers. Hot water as hot as you can stand will help soothe the itch. Washing all of your stuff is very important and regular old laundry detergent won't get it out of your clothes. Get yourself so...

Re: Hikes / peaks clear of snow and ice for this weekend

Hey Sean, I checked out your TR on the Verdugos. Being a Burbank resident, I have hiked all of those trails, but never ALL IN ONE DAY! Pretty studly achievment there! One of my favorites is to get dropped off at The Grotto on La Tuna late on a summer afternoon and hike over the hill home. Hitting th...

Re: Training for Mt Whitney - Day Hikes

Baden Powell from Islip Saddle was one of my favorite training hikes for Whitney. I think it's about 16-miles round trip, closer to 18 if you bag all of the peaks in between. Since I live in Burbank, I would also hike the "Vital Link" trail from Wildwood Canyon Park to the radio towers onc...

Probably too late on this but you could certainly do Valley Forge or West Fork CG from Red Box or Henninger flat or Idlehour from Pinecrest. all really nice campgounds.

There is water at Spruce Grove, cannot speak for Hoagees. The water fountain at Sturtevant Camp has been shut down for the season. It is really pretty in Big Santa Anita Canyon right now with the remaining fall color.

Re: Manhunt in the Verdugos for Missing FBI Agent

They found Mr. Ivens body yesterday. Two "un-identified hikers" noticed a "suspicious odor" behind St. Francis of Xavier Catholic Church off of Scott Rd. in Burbank and alerted authorities. The official law enofrcement word is that Mr Ivens had probably killed himself there the d...

Is Buckhorn Campground open again? Looking at the ANF website it appears to be. If anyone has been recently, how is the campground? Are the improvements noticeable? Appreciable?

Re: Lets talk sleeping pads

I use a regular old Thermarest pad and I am normally pretty comfortable. If you sleep on your side a lot, consider digging a "hip trench" before you throw down your groundcloth or tent. It's pretty much what it sounds like; a horizontal depression an inch or so deep where you suspect your ...

Must say your report of trail conditions between Devore and Red Box contrasts with recent reports of overgrown and hard to follow. Maybe some maintenance has occured - good news! Devore to West Fork is in great condition but from West Fork to Valley Forge I took the road. There were trail crews wor...

Gabrieleno Trail, Chantry Flats to Switzer's 6/15-6/17/12

Took a trip that I have been wanting to do since before the Station Fire; The Gabrieleno Trail , or what of it you can hike continuously, which for me was Chantry Flats to Switzers Picnic area. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm8.staticflickr.com/7116/7416636352_786e695124.jpg Rob at the Tr...

While I will admit that the video you posted of the actions of Ventura County trying to zone businesses out of existence is reprehensible, I have a harder time understanding your angst over Agenda 21, which from my limited perusal seems more directed at developing countries. The other 3 links I have...

Idlehour 6/3/12

Hiked up from Pinecrest today with my favorite hiking buddy, Maggie. We got a bit of a late start at 9:30 but there was cloud cover until about halfway up to Henninger Flats. Seems like a lot of folks spent the night up there last night, as we passed all kinds of people with packs. Looked like a Bro...

Trail Canyon 5/27/12

After learnng of the Grand Re-opening of the Big Tujunga on this site a few days ago, I decided to take a little jaunt up Trail Canyon this morning. What a wonderful outing it turned out to be. I reached the gate at Trail Canyon at about 7:30, only to find it locked and a fire closure sign still pos...

The vehicles looked sort of like this, only smaller:

kind of a trip seeing these things motoring about the hills above Burbank.

Re: Manhunt in the Verdugos for Missing FBI Agent

So I was hiking in the Verdugos today and three ERT vehicles passed me. the first two each had four non-uniformed camo-wearing men in them, while the 3rd vehicle was piloted by an LA County Sheriff. The vehicles were four-wheeled buggy type things that reminded me of the "Banana Buggies" t...

Re: Gabrielino Trail - Chantry Flat to West Fork

The section from Red Box down to West Fork sure had some nasty spots though where I got completely lost in fields of poodle dog bush. That stuff was everywhere! Are you referring to the section of trail between Valley Forge and West Fork? We started down that stretch last year and had to double bac...
