Re: Lets talk sleeping pads

Two and a half inches thickness is mighty nice, compared to the bad old days of camping on the ground, but I'm getting spoiled: I'm now wishing they'd come up with a five-inch-thick backpacking version. Ultra-Light, Ultra-Thick, Ultra-Comfy! :D I'm holding out for an Anti-gravity pad or hover pad o...

Re: Dawson Saddle to Copter Ridge(19 May) & Ross Mtn 26 May)

As for me, I always like to check out peak registers, and why someone would feel the need to remove them (and carry them out!) is beyond me. Maybe they're on some sort of mildly insane personal mission. Like the people who knock down "ducks" or cairns. I doubt they are carried out, I've f...

Re: Trail Canyon 5/27/12

After learnng of the Grand Re-opening of the Big Tujunga on this site a few days ago, I decided to take a little jaunt up Trail Canyon this morning. What a wonderful outing it turned out to be. I reached the gate at Trail Canyon at about 7:30, only to find it locked and a fire closure sign still po...

Re: Skyline trail to Long Valley

Congrats, Matt. I've been curious about that one for some time but have never worked up the courage (or worked out the time to train). HJ P.S. I've found the Tyvek actually gets better (less crinkly noise) with time. The "standard trick" is to run it through the washer a couple of times. ...

Re: Skyline trail to Long Valley

That was an interesting approach you had to the hike--bivying halfway though it. If I did that, I don't think I'd have the will power to wake up! HA HA You have the specter of hiking in the blazing sun & heat hanging over your head, to motivate. Yeah I agree about the average hiker, but this is...

Re: Mt Lukens via Stone Cyn Trail -summit 1038-

Cool, thanks for the report. Encouraging to hear about the bear up there, good sign of recovery. Any further details on the condition of the trail? I'd assume, like most other trails in the burn area, that poodle dog is everywhere and poor, sandy tread? Looking forward to getting back up there, as ...

Mt Lukens via Stone Cyn Trail -summit 1038-

http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=1596250 Near record pace for me to Mt Lukens via Stone Cyn Trail. Lost the data for my 1hr42min trip some years ago. If I hadn't stopped at all I'd have shaved 7min30sec off todays 1hr56min35sec. But I wasn't trying very hard either. As I recall I was...

I have used both spot units. I'll concede the Spot tech support is non-existent But the units work and I consider them inexpensive when you consider the consequences of being in trouble and not being able to ask for help. What is your life worth? Mis-use of these units are rampant. The SAR community...

Pay for and use the tracking. I personally have never needed to use the 911 feature and there is controversy on over use and over reliance on it.

Used as a last last final, I'm gonna die if I don't get help option there is no equal (IMO)

I think it is an unfounded fear, that the quicklink is inferior or mis-reading of the rating stamped on the quicklink.
