Cresenta Valley Station handles most of the San Gabriel Mountains.

But I doubt they keep archives there. Likely it would be in the Records & Identification Bureau

What are the dates roughly for these events?

Re: Looking for information regarding 1978 debris flow.

Detailed information would be from Police Reports from the Sheriff's dept Your best bet would be newspaper archives at least as a place to start Most public libraries have good newspaper online databases Some of the lesser known newspapers might only be available in microfiche in some local librarie...

Re: Allison Mine Trail

it's not an "official" trail. Rather it is a "USE" trail that has been improved here and there over the years by whomever had the time, energy, and inclination to do it. But that aside you are in a natural area, with many hazards. You need to be aware of the hazards. Be able to d...

Re: what's this from?

It certainly is some domestic stock animal

I know of 3 common alternatives
  1. Mule
  2. Llama
  3. Goat
Of the 3 the only one that would fit would be Mule. I cant ever remember seeing a Donkey but if people are using Goats and Llamas why not Donkeys

Pack goats
Packing with Llamas
Hiking with donkey

The weight / cost issue is like the speed/cost issue and all play directly into the misery index. It seems to me the people who are carrying the "Refrigerator packs" are miserable. My personal pack decision has several factors . One is my back is a mess I broke a chunk off one of the verte...

my suggestion would be to gather the gear & supplies for a 2 day trip and see if it fits in the smaller pack.

some peoples gotta have gear is anothers hunk of dead weight

I personally have seen more bear in the San gabriel Mtns than any other place.

I do spend a great deal of time in the mountains here and less in other areas so I cannot really say if there are more or less here.

But there are lots of bears in the san gabriel mountains
