There is no murk...
If you're just hiking no parking permit is required.
I'd be more concerned my vehicle would be burglarized or have parts stolen than and thing else

Re: Redwoods in San Gabriel Mountains
It is my understanding at one time redwoods ranged to the mountains in San Diego.
Logging destroyed those groves
Logging destroyed many special Places in the San Gabriel mountains.
If I remember correctly some redwoods where planted in Cooper canyon. Possibly in other places too

Yeah the maker was disturbed by construction and eventually I assume it was thrown down the side of the mountain.
Though I guess someone could have carried it down

Re: Strawberry Peak Routes
Post Station Fire it will be different. There was lots of reassuring hand holds. What is there now is anybody's guess. The worst spot IMO the route appears to go one way to the left but actually goes to the right. If you are at a spot that is very exposed you may want to backup and look for a less a...

Re: Burrowing Owls
Are you hiking/biking in the Verdugos, Matt? Yes this is in the Verdugos... I'd have to take some time to research the other options. But the most striking feature that clinched it for me was the shape and feathers around the eyes There did seem to be a small vestigial ear tufts and the coloring wa...

Burrowing Owls
I've been hiking/Mtn Biking weekdays in the predawn hours before work. I see small birds (large) eyes reflecting (orange) on the road side or on the trails and XC routes. Being O dark thirty and these small birds flying off into the brush I could never get any identifying information. On my Friday A...

Re: Hikers cited after dangerous Malibu Canyon rescue
The other part is Malibu rescue...well if the rescue is so harrowing, then dont do it. Personally I don't see the problem with waiting. Time will resolve the flooding issue. People need to deal with it. If they where in a safe place and where just wet and cold. Good they're safe. 12 hrs waiting col...

Re: Hikers cited after dangerous Malibu Canyon rescue
There is so much that isn't known or told in news stories that I wouldn't pass judgement on what is being reported. I am well aware of the authorities holding their cards close to their chest and the medias lack of willingness to dig out the truth I have no doubt there is a "Story behin...

Re: Deer Park Trail
Many of the huge canyon-crossing siphons are constructed of riveted pipe section and still in service. Yeah I've seen those photos many times and understand how they where made. Mostly with a "hydraulic" riveter, though some would have to be bucked by hand with some poor slob on the insid...

This photo prompted me to do what I've meant to do for years. Look up the history of this type of pipe. According to what I found this type of pipe was made from 1859 to 1900 This link opens a PDF on steeltanks .com with a paper on the history of steel water pipe http://www.steeltank.com/Portals/0/p...

Re: Rattlesnakes are out, WTF!!
'bout a week or so ago I saw a baby rattler on Hostter in the Verdugos
I picked it up with my trash grabber and moved it off the road.
it wasn't too happy but its wasn't in any condition to do anything 'bout it either

Yeah a consumer grade weed whacker is all but useless IMEO Those darn Poodle Dog stalks are tough. A brush cutter or clearing saw with a metal blade is the way to go.
