Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

Are they REALLY gonna try and open up 39? It'd just be bad news for the rest of ACH as all those slobs get farther. I thought it was a permanent closure. I know it still goes thru, USFS and Fire have been using it, though I think it's only 1 lane and a lot of rockfall. I was camping on Pacifico Mtn...

Joe In general GPS units don't record the data to do the Post Processing needed to do what you want to do Can't do it with track data. Or waypoints for that matter There is a consumer level Post Processing package from delorme. GPS PostPro 2.0 When I start out I try to calibrate the barometric altim...

Re: GPS discussion

There has also been discussion of the relative accuracy of GPS receivers and measuring wheels. As I clearly stated on another thread, I don't care which is inherently more accurate. A wheel is certainly better on a smooth surface, although it can be problematic on a rocky trail. But it is a silly &...

Re: GPS discussion

There have been several discussions recently related to the accuracy of GPS receivers. One major factor in the accuracy equation is the chipset the unit is based on. SiRF II used in the newer units has superior sensitivity essential for maintaining sat lock under tree and brush cover This is enhanc...

Do you know about when did that fence went up? As I recall it was sometime in early to mid 2005 Matt As a FYI The impression I got was that the owner wanted to sell or somehow transfer the land to the city or county upon their death and just wanted to be left alone... Re: More Mt. Lukens

Do you mean it's private property from the forest boundary south to Maurice Ave? Interesting. That is correct Of course, legally, it's a public right-of-way, having existed and been open to the public more than seven years. I've never had an access problem, but I haven't been up the trail for a whi...

IMO the road is more about work for contractors than keeping a functioning road open....

Competence not needed

Just wait until they start working on Highway 39!

According to the Forest Service the work on the road (hwy 39) and the road itself will have minimal environmental impact -Have at it!-

What's the "Camelback" you're referring to? Is that the knife edged saddle between x4227 and x4275? Or? I think it is more 3600 ft & 3760 ft This is the Google Earth KMZ for the view of Camelback Cheers Matt KmlFile 1.3 http://maps.google.com/mapfiles/kml/pus ... ushpin.png 1.1 http:/...

Now, all I need to do is to find a good way to "mosaic" them together, since the biggest sheet of paper I can print is 11x17 and I think the usgs uses something like 36x50 (or some such). Yes, it could be done by hand with a paper cutter, but I keep hoping for something a little more soph...

Yeah, those are great, aren't they? Very high quality pdf's that, on a good printer, are just about as good as the store-bought USGS ones. They're wonderful for planning and "nav noodling" -- mark 'em up all you want; they're free. Now, all I need to do is to find a good way to "mosa...
