I always send my boots to him for resoles/repairs. He does the warranty work for REI also.

Re: Summiting with out your packs

In my experience, I'd say that the vast majority of hikers coming up from the JMT ditch their big packs at the junction Alan mentioned, and carry either a small pack, or even just a bottle of water, from there to the summit. It's your call, but I doubt anyone bothers the packs. After all, if they do...

Re: Basic Mountaineering Orientation - Winter 2011

Haven't read this entire thread, so maybe someone has suggested this already, but just in case - you might consider practicing roped travel as well. Harnesses help, but aren't essential - you can tie the rope around your waist. It's not a difficult skill to learn, as it's mostly teamwork. But, learn...

Re: Michelle Yu's Last words

Her entry is two after mine - feels a bit eerie to see those . Am quite sure I didn't see her, though, as I turned up Register Ridge shortly thereafter. In terms of what information people put in the register - more info would be collected if each page had column headers - Date, Name, Time In, Trail...

Re: Dec. 5th, 2010: 'Experienced' hiker missing on Baldy

...But I am still under the impression that she hiked, and fell, on Saturday, when the weather was not at all bad. Is is likely that someone intimately familiar with the mountain could have headed down towards Dawson by mistake on Saturday? It might have depended upon what time she summited. I sign...

Re: Proper ice axe size

Excellent points, bertfivesix. Thanks for the humor! On a more serious note - the length of ice axe doesn't make much difference when used for self-arrest. Where it does matter is when it's used as a probe on glaciers. When you're crossing terrain where there may be crevasses, the axe is carried in ...

Re: Proper ice axe size

To "size" the length on an ice axe - hold the axe by cupping it in your hand, and let the axe dangle by your side. It should clear the floor by an inch or two - not much more. Since we tend to have different arm lengths, sizing an axe by height isn't always accurate. Best to actually hold ...

Re: Hiking Baldy (and surrounding peaks) in Winter

Good post, Norma. Thanks for taking the time to write it up, and sorry to hear about your bone chip. Would like to make a comment re: route-finding on Baldy - do NOT take it for granted. Any tall peak that close to the ocean can go from 100 mile views to 10' views in short order, so know how to get ...

Check out Cocoons. They're intended as overglasses, but some of the models are narrow. They are durable and have a good warranty.

Re: Owens Peak, southern Sierra, 5.21.10

Nice pics, Norma and Dave, but then I'm a bit biased - I oriented my house so that I would see Owens over the top on my computer monitor - it's about 7 miles away. I did an interesting "exploratory" hike in IWV Canyon on Monday. Parked about a mile south of the Magnolia Mine and headed up ...

Hey Patrick - Good to see you again, and yes - that group summitted about 10 minutes after we did. Thanks for giving them a "pep talk" - when we left them on the last pitch before the summit they were looking pretty worried. I was surprised to see how much snow had melted away as all winte...

Re: Dog shoes

Bill - You might also try duct-taping the boots to your dog. It works quite well, and mine doesn't seem to mind when I pull the tape off. I haven't used duct tape to hold booties on, but I have used it for leg bandages. When I needed booties for my Newf, Ruff Wear was the only brand large enough for...

Re: Baldy Bowl (5/8/2010)

Sam, If I wanted to take the regular Ski Hut trail all the way to the Summit would I still need crampons or is there a way to make it to the top using the dry land? I did Baldy via Register Ridge last Saturday, and came down via the "regular Ski Hut trail". With few exceptions, that trail...

I saw a cave on my way up yesterday - did you have a probe inserted near the head of the cave? There were a couple of packs laying on a tarp on my way up, but everything was gone on my way back.

I carry one of these year-round. It serves as an emergency bivy bag and sleeping bag: http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/news/article/mps/uan/5034 Mine's the bright orange.
