Was the road open all the way to Dough Flat? How are conditions. I thought that was a seasonal closure.

Re: ALDER CREEK TRAIL

I'm confused. Nothing new. But how do you avoid the private Chilao parcels if you're doing Alder Creek point-to-point? Can you legally walk 3N18/Loomis Ranch Road? Is that a public easement/license?

Re: C2T2C: Leatherneck to Skyline

Regarding your boot strategy, I've always decided that getting a better pair of boots/shoes was worth the extra money I might spend. But maybe I've just bought into the marketing.

After experimenting some, taking into consideration fit, support, durability, comfort, and cost, what do you find the ...

There is a register at the summit. I did not see a benchmark, but also did not look too diligently for one. Maybe teke saw something that I didn't.

Mount Starr

Yesterday, Keith and I met up and tackled Mount Starr which towers over the Little Lakes Valley at 12,864’. It’s easy access from the end or Rock Creek Road which is part of the attraction. You can easily get it as a day hike and still have time remaining.

I went up Friday afternoon and camped at ...

Re: Super Safe Hiking in Very Dangerous Conditions

Hiked Vital Links again this weekend with my better looking half. It's still steep, hot, and shadeless. Went to Verdugo Peak and discovered a threat in was not aware of previously so I'm sounding the alarm. If you hike here, they (whoever they are) will try to groom you.

You've been warned.

Re: Red's Shortcut, Ken Burton, Dark Canyon

Just an update on conditions on Ken Burton. I was on that trail Saturday. For the most part, it is in good shape. On the top half or so, the brush is getting thick and starting to encroach. There's a fair amount of poison oak on the shaded, north-facing slopes, but it is avoidable. The bottom ...

Re: Peak 4,054

When we were walking on the moon for Sean's birthday in December, I couldn't help but notice 4,054, higher and to the west of the ridge we were walking along. I tucked it away in the back of my mind and decided I'd go back and get it one day. Yesterday was that day.

Not much to add on the route ...

The most recent one that I saw was about a month ago.

Yes, "sandier" and "sandiest" are the correct comparative and superlative forms of the adjective "sandy".

Whew!

You know that big ass peak between Yermo and Baker that you pass by on the I-15 on your way to Vegas (or in my case Utah)? That's Cave Mountain. I've driven by it a zillion times wondering about it and always wanting to get on top. Well, yesterday that became a reality. I had a free day from work so ...

Black Mountain via Trail 404

Me and Mrs. Rico were in Las Vegas over the weekend for the Super Bowl. Ordinarily, I wouldn't go anywhere near Las Vegas over Super Bowl weekend, but my company was sponsoring an event so we went.

By Saturday morning, we'd already had enough of the Strip and everything that comes with it, so we ...

Beckley Canyon Exploratory with Hawks/Pickens Sidecar

Jeff, Nate and I have been trying to get together for a Mt. Pickens outing for some time. We had the outing scheduled for early January, but the date kept getting pushed out because of closure orders. When the order was finally (partially) lifted last Friday, it was on.

We initially were talking ...

Me and the Mrs. decided to get out yesterday before the rain hit and ended up going up the Gridley Trail to the old fire lookout on Nordhoff Peak. We parked at the trailhead at the end of Gridley Road (which was packed) and started around 11 a.m. This is a popular trail with MTBers and we could ...

Super Safe Hiking in Very Dangerous Conditions

With the ANF and much of the Santa Monicas closed due to extreme fire conditions, I had to look elsewhere yesterday for some outdoor entertainment. Fortunately, there is a local range that is apparently impervious to burning and is not entirely closed down...yet. Being in such close proximity to the ...
