Re: Taco Speed
DABS FTW!
Taco won this comfortably. I read one of his IG posts that he had a bike weight disadvantage as compared to the other riders so he had to ride farther and longer each day to maintain advantage.
Just think what he would have done with a lighter rig.

Re: What in tarnation?!
That Sierra Club write-up is annoying.
And I don't understand the reference to the Boy Scout rule about changing your socks. What is that? I was a scout and never heard any sort of best-pratices about socks. Maybe I just never got the sock merit badge.

Notes:
• Pinyon Ridge gets decently steep as you approach the road to S. Hawkins
• S. Hawkins still has some of the finest views in the range
• Interesting flora grows along the Hawkins Ridge
• Little Jimmy Spring has the best water
• JeffH has started something he cannot now stop

Re: Probable Mt Baldy winter closures
Little bit of a different dynamic, but the same thing happened at Santa Paula Canyon. "Influencers" plastered it all over social media and it became a total shit show. They closed it completely down for a spell during the pandemic. Then they ("they" being CalTrans I believe) seve...

Re: Probable Mt Baldy winter closures
Not to be a smart aleck or anything (that would be so antithetical to my nature), but maybe we could privatize SAR. You could buy a membership with an upfront cost and annual dues that would permit you to use the SAR services. It would be like a country club or an HOA for hikers. Or maybe there coul...

Re: Tuolumne River and Grand Canyon
Really nice. I've come in from the Murphy Creek trailhead before which is pleasant too. Ran into a big old bruin on the trail who was slow to move off the trail. I was there in October in a drought year and the White Cascade was still pumping. We jumped in the pool below it and it was frigid. The co...

Re: Probable Mt Baldy winter closures
Winter on Baldy isn't the problem. Stupid shit that encourages inexperienced and ill-prepared folks to climb it like the Six Pack of Peaks Challenge and other social media hyping is the problem IMO. Before the "great hiking era" that we're currently enduring, nobody that I recall was talki...

Really cool pic of your great, great grandparents. When I see those old pics of folks hiking, I'm always impressed by the fact that the ladies were always in dresses and the gentlemen in coat and tie. I can't even fathom. Looks like there's a firebreak going up that ridge in the background. Anybody ...

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)
What if Colin made the same mistake that teke made on the descent and got off on that lateral ridge to the southwest of the main ridge route? Ultimately I think he would have hit the lower stretch of Clamshell Truck Trail and realized his error. But instead of backtracking like teke did, what if he ...

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)
Assuming he did this, what do you suppose is the entry point into BSA he was searching for? Where the East Fork hits Spring Camp (which would be west of Monrovia Peak) or where that subsidiary drainage comes in further south and immediately west of Rankin? Also, I presume that if Colin was going to ...

Certainly not the outcome anyone wanted, but the outcome we probably all expected at this stage. RIP Albert. ? Thank you! All I ever heard when I was younger was how great English beer was. Then I discovered it was all hype and/or delusion. It freakin' sucks just like English food. Weak and warm. Doesn't even come close to good old American craft beer. There I said it...English beer sucks

This...not until you're quite high can you feel a good breeze and let go of the feelings dragged up here from the concrete world. Often those feelings are the heaviest thing in your rucksack.
