Re: Search for Eugene Jo 6/25/19
Btw, does anyone else think it was a bit ambitious for a 73-year-old to hike from Three Points to Waterman? That's a fairly difficult hike. No, I don't think that at all either with respect to Mr. Jo or as it relates to 73 year old hikers generally. Mr. Jo's problem did not appear to be conditionin...

Re: Search for Eugene Jo 6/25/19
Montrose SAR tweeted 45 mins ago that Mr. Jo has been found alive. Sounds like he was in Devil's Canyon but limited details. He has been airlifted to the hospital. Good outcome.

Re: Search for Eugene Jo 6/25/19
I was thinking something very similar. He misses the junction for the trail back to 3 Points on the descent, eventually realizes he's made a mistake, tries to correct that error by dropping south, then falls or ends up in the upper reaches of Bear Canyon. Doesn't seem realistic that he would just co...

Re: I've Got Friends In Low Places
Beautiful pics.
In the Woolsey Fire burn area, I've actually seen far fewer rattlesnakes this year than previously. Despite the rains and rapid revegetation, I think the fire really decimated their food sources.
Sigh.

Re: Is it Racist?
I'm disturbed by the whole premise of the Op-Ed. That premise is that everyone who ventures into the outdoors has a moral obligation and duty to publicly share location information so that self-absorbed, selfie-taking "influencers" with no outdoor ethics or respect for LNT principles can d...

Is it Racist?
Tosh.O does a bit called "Is it racist?" where he shows various video clips to his audience and then asks "is it racist?" This is the SGMDF version of that. Last month, the High Country News published an Op-Ed by the founder of Melanin Base Camp that argued that the failure to ge...

Re: Shortcut Saddle to Charlton Flats via Silver Moccasin Trail
The last time I hiked this trail I scared up something big shortly after the trail crosses Big Tujunga Creek. It went bashing through the undergrowth on the south side of the creek. I tell myself it was a bear, but it could have been a deer. Deer seem to be more stealthy and cautious than bears thou...

I didn't realize that ridge actually had a name. That first rocky outcropping you mention is regular quick out and back for me.
Haven't been to the peak by this route since the fires, but that upper section used to be pretty dang brushy.

Awesome trip jfr. My experience on Telescope is similar to yours. When I went, the wind was blowing all the way from the ridgeline to the summit. We had planned to stay a bit once on top to bask in the glory of it all, but once there, the wind was so relentless, and it was so biting cold, that we im...

Nicely done. That's seldom-visited country.
That trail is supposed to punch through and intersect with the Red Reef Trail but I don't know how much action and/or maintenance it sees.

Wow, they were quite deep into the canyon.
It's the old adage "better the devil you know than the devil that you don't."
The better play was struggling back to the saddle and the known trail to Ice House instead of dropping further into the unknown abyss (says Captain Obvious).

How did you come down, its nice to loop around and come down Castle Canyon and then hook into one of the Rubio connector trails. This is one of my standard conditioning hikes. Jeremiah's post about his recent jaunt to W. Fuji with a return via the Lone Tree Trail inspired me to finally go check out the Lone Tree Trail.
